Owings extended his hitting streak to six games, going 1-for-4 on Saturday against the Phillies. Owings started at shortstop in the contest for the fifth time this year and the third time in the past eight games. With Nick Ahmed struggling badly at the plate, Owings could see more playing time at short, or move over there permanently if Ahmed needs time in the minors to work on his offensive game. Owings has posted just a .689 OPS, so he needs to keep up his recent hot streak, but he seems over his slow start to the year.

Owings stayed hot with his fifth straight multi-hit game Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs against the Phillies. Owings has pushed his average up to .270 for the season and has two home runs and four steals. He has shaken off a cold start to the season and raised his average almost 50 points with this five game stretch. His lack of walks limits him in leagues that value on-base percentage (just .294 on the year), but he is moving back into relevance in most leagues.

Owings produced his fourth consecutive multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 on Friday in a loss to the Phillies. Owings has raised his average 30 points to .254 with the recent run of success. It's a good sign that he is moving past his early season struggles. That said, he has just two extra-bases hits and hasn't drawn a walk during the streak. It's easy to forget that Owings' season ended last year with a shoulder injury that required surgery. Patience is still required with the young infielder as he tries to get back to where he was before the injury.

Owings went 2-for-5 with a run scored Wednesday in a loss to the Nationals. This was Owings' third multi-hit game in a row, which has raised his average 25 points to .246 for the season. His overall line is still a sub-par .246/.271/.377, and he has walked in just 3.3 percent of his plate appearances. He may not be an on-base machine as a major leaguer, but he needs to improve his plate discipline in order to post a decent batting average and tap into his double-digit home run potential.

Owings was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle Tuesday in a win over Washington, as he went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Owings may be getting into a groove after a slow start to the season - he has three multi-hit games in his last five starts and has a .346/.370/.654 line in 26 at-bats over the past week. He continues to split time in the middle infield with Nick Ahmed and Aaron Hill, which will continue for the foreseeable future despite Ahmed's struggles at the plate.

Owings is out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres. Owings will not face right-hander Andrew Cashner, as Nick Ahmed will handle shortstop with Cliff Pennington at the keystone. Chalk this up as a regular day off for the 23-year-old infielder, who is 4-for-25 at the dish so far in May.

Owings went 1-for-4 with his second home run and two RBI on Friday in a win over the Padres. Owings made his fourth appearance at shortstop in this one, but more importantly is heating up at the dish with a three-game hitting streak. He has a ways to go to reach broad fantasy relevance, but the display of his power potential is encouraging.

Owings went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored Thursday in a win over the Padres. Owings has had a tough go of late, so it's encouraging to see him get a couple of hits and reach base three times. He is still striking out at a very high rate (28.9 percent), which is going to limit his offensive upside and fantasy value until he starts making more contact.

Owings had a double in four at-bats in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with Colorado. He also struck out twice in the contest. Owings has slumped lately, collecting just two hits in his last 16 at-bats and dropping his batting line to just .207/.233/.299 on the season, which has resulted in losing some at-bats to Aaron Hill lately. He is also striking out in 29.3 percent of his plate appearances, which is a significant spike compared to his career rate. With no explanation for his struggles offered yet, he is at risk of losing even more playing time, or a trip to the minors to straighten things out.

Owings is out of the lineup for the third day in a row Wednesday. There has been no word of an injury, so perhaps Owings is just falling out of favor as the preferred option at the keystone. Aaron Hill will get the start Wednesday and hit sixth.
