Owings (shoulder) is scheduled to face live pitching Friday for the first time this spring, the Arizona Republic reports. As he continues to make progress following offseason shoulder surgery, Owings is expected to play in approximately 10 spring training games with the hope of being ready to join the team's Opening Day lineup in April. If healthy, he'll likely exit camp as the starting shortstop for the Diamondbacks.

Owings was expected to miss the first 7-10 days of games due to a shoulder injury, but is progressing more quickly than expected, the Arizona Republic reports. "I don't have an exact (return) date," manager Chip Hale said, "but he's past where I thought he was." Owings underwent offseason surgery on his left shoulder, and is taking it somewhat slowly in his recovery, but is still expected to be ready for Opening Day. He figures to make a bulk of the starts at shortstop this season.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Thursday that Owings (shoulder) will be a little behind in spring training but should still be ready for Opening Day.Hale said essentially the same thing back in early December, so his comments don't come as much of a surprise. However, with Owings indeed not ready to hit the ground running at the start of spring training, it could open the door for Nick Ahmed or Cliff Pennington to see additional reps at short early on. The 23-year-old Owings hit .261/.300/.406 with six homers and eight steals in 91 games last season before undergoing surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder in October.

Owings (shoulder) may not be ready for the start of spring training but is expected to be 100 percent for Opening Day, Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona reports. A head-first slide into home plate in June resulted in a labrum injury to Owings' left shoulder, one which required surgery to repair at the conclusion of the season. Owings hit .277/.313/.458 with six homers and seven steals in 238 at-bats before being forced out of action, and the Diamondbacks' trade of Didi Gregorius suggests they plan to deploy Owings as the starter at short next season, health permitting.

Owings underwent successful surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder Thursday. The 23-year-old struggled mightily upon his return from the shoulder injury, going just 15-for-72 (.208 average) in September, but Owings said Dr. James Andrews told him he did not further damage the labrum by continuing to play. The Diamondbacks still have not established a recovery timetable, but Owings is expected to be ready for spring training, and if healthy, he'll likely carve out a regular role in the middle infield.

Owings will undergo surgery on his left shoulder Thursday. Owings initially hurt the shoulder on a slide home in late June, ultimately leading to his placement on the DL, and the shoulder continued to present issues on and off upon his return in September. He'll go under the knife Thursday, and while specifics regarding the procedure remain scarce, Owings is expected to be ready for spring training. The 23-year-old hit .261/.300/.406 with six homer and eight steals in 91 games this season.

Owings (shoulder) is not in the lineup for Sunday's season finale against the Cardinals. Owings isn't expected to be dealing with a serious ailment, but it will cut his 2014 season short nonetheless. Cliff Pennington will take over at the keystone for the second straight game.

Owings (shoulder) is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Cardinals. Owings' injury is not considered serious, but with the Diamondbacks out of the playoff race, they will not take any chances with his health. Cliff Pennington will get the start at second base in Owings' place.

Owings was scratched from Friday's lineup against the Cardinals due to a sore left shoulder. Owings was scratched for precautionary reasons, as the team has no incentive to chance him injuring himself with the postseason hopes well in the rear-view mirror. He will have a good chance to retain the everyday duties at second base in 2015 if he has a good spring training, but his 2014 season hasn't been ruled over yet either.
