Padres signed OF Carlos Quentin to a three-year contract extension. The deal also includes a mutual option for 2016. Quentin will reportedly pocket $27 million guaranteed, with $3 million more available in incentives. The Padres certainly need as much pop in the middle of the order as they can get, but it's a risk to give an injury-prone, soon-to-be 30-year-old that much money, especially with San Diego's budget constraints. Quentin is batting .273/.389/.525 with nine homers over 40 games this season. He spent the first two months of the season on the disabled list following knee surgery.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Padres are close to signing Carlos Quentin to a three-year extension "believed to be worth about $27 million." Heyman says the deal would include a "very reachable bonus" that would bring the total value to $30 million. There had been reports that the Padres were more interested in extending Quentin than trading him, and they've proven to be accurate. San Diego could extend Huston Street, as well. Quentin had been pursued by the Reds, Indians and Pirates.

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Padres are now planning to try to sign Carlos Quentin and Huston Street to multi-year deals. Quentin and Street are popular trade targets this month, but both players have indicated a desire to stay in San Diego. Quentin is a San Diego native, so the match makes sense. There is some uncertainty with the Padres' ownership at the moment, but Heyman was told that current owner John Moores and presumptive new owner Ron Fowler have given approval to sign Quentin and Street to new multi-year pacts. Of course, it's possible the Padres are putting this out there as a way to raise the asking price from prospective suitors and it's possible they could shop one or both players aggressively if they can't make progress in contract talks before July 31.

Carlos Quentin (knee) is sitting out his second straight game Tuesday but could be ready to play Wednesday. Quentin is feeling some soreness in his surgically-repaired knee, but he's reported improvement. The Padres surely want him to come back healthy in produce in hopes of dealing him later this month.

Carlos Quentin was scratched from Monday's lineup. No word on whether his absence is injury-related. We wouldn't rule it out considering his history, but he is also one of the biggest bats on the trade market. Alexi Amarista is making the start in left field Monday while Logan Forsythe will play second base.

Carlos Quentin went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI as the Padres beat the Dodgers 7-6 on Saturday. Pinch-runner Everth Cabrera's steal of home in the ninth proved to be the key play, but Quentin did much of the work before that, driving in runs in the first, fourth and eighth innings. He has eight homers in 35 games for the Padres.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Reds, Indians and Pirates are interested in trading for Carlos Quentin. Heyman notes that the Marlins have also been in on Quentin, but they might not be anymore after their acquisition of Carlos Lee. The Tigers and Blue Jays had also expressed interest but don't appear to be in the mix any longer. The Padres have interest in keeping Quentin, who is a native to San Diego, over the long term, but their uncertain ownership might not make it possible.

The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo lists the Pirates among the teams interested in acquiring Carlos Quentin. The Pirates have also had preliminary discussions regarding Justin Upton. According to the Pittsburgh-Tribune Review, Brad Lincoln could be part of any potential deal. Quentin has a .970 OPS with seven home runs in 30 games this season and is likely to attract heavy interest leading up the the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

According to FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi, "it would be difficult" for the Padres to sign Carlos Quentin to an extension until ownership is settled. Morosi suggests the Padres could trade Quentin at the non-waiver deadline and try to re-sign him again next offseason as a sort of hedge. Quentin has a .970 OPS with seven home runs in 30 games this season and has been linked to the Tigers and Blue Jays, among others, since returning from the disabled list in late May.

Carlos Quentin went 1-for-2 and mashed his sixth home run of the season in Saturday's loss to the Athletics. Quentin also walked in the game. Many pundits expected his power numbers to drop off dramatically with his move to San Diego, but he's now hitting .417 with six homers and 13 RBI in just 48 at-bats. The hard-hittin' Quentin may have a new home before the trade deadline, but should provide plenty of power production wherever he plays.
