The Royals have an off-day Monday, so if the injury is minor, Gordon should avoid a disabled list stint.

Gordon played center field for the first time in his 11-year career on Wednesday, and he's penciled in to make his first ever start at the position Thursday against Tampa Bay.

Gordon took over for Lorenzo Cain (rest) in center field in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday. The very first batter of the inning for the Rays, Logan Morrison, hit a shot to right-center field. Gordon, a four-time Gold Glove winner, crashed into the wall while making an outstanding leaping catch. Now, for the first time in his career, the veteran will view the game's first pitch from center field. With the team looking to manage Cain's health, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Gordon get enough time at the position to unlock eligibility there.

Gordon's offensive woes have mystified the entire Royals organization, Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reports.

Ever since Gordon inked a $72 million contract to re-sign with the club in 2016, things have gone downhill. Gordon's defense remains a strong point, but his hitting has been a concern. The 33-year-old hit just .220 last season with an OPS of .692. Through 29 games this year, he's slashing .171/.269/.219 with no home runs. "He's one of those guys who feels he has to live up to his contract," said one Royals official. "He cares so much that it just looks like he's pressing as a result. Believe me, it's a mystery to all of us. It's gone on for quite a while and we all hope he goes back to being that special ballplayer." For fantasy owners, trading Gordon at such a low point isn't wise. Yet, holding onto him over blooming waiver players is tough, too.
