The veteran's .918 save percentage and 2.83 GAA really aren't that bad considering his subpar 8-11-5 record, but his status as the starting netminder on the Pacific Division's worst team keeps him out of the win column more often than not.

Smith saved 34 of 37 shots from the Jets in Friday's 4-3 home win.

The victory was Smith's first in close to a month, and he's still working with an ugly 2.83 GAA on the season -- that doesn't scream "All-Star" to us, though he remains the clear-cut No. 1 goalie in Arizona.

However, in his last eight games, he has an .885 save percentage and 3.27 GAA, so he's been cold lately. The Jets are 24th in the league in shots per game with 28.8, and 14th in goals per game with 2.73, so Smith has an opportunity to rebound against a middle of the road team.

Craig Morgan of Arizona Reports writes that Coyotes coach Dave Tippett did not formally announce who was starting in net, adding that the club "had ping-pong balls in the locker room" to decide who would start. As funny as that sounds, it's quite fitting for a Coyotes team sitting in the cellar of the Pacific Division at 11-22-6. It's safe to avoid Smith in just about any fantasy league as he hasn't won in his last nine games with his GAA well into the threes.

Smith allowed the game-winner with 36 seconds left in overtime, as the Coyotes lost to the Ducks, 3-2. Smith stopped 32 of 35 shots in the defeat Friday.

It was the first time in nine games that Arizona earned any type of point, but nonetheless, the team's losing streak now sits at nine. Through the first three months of the season, Smith was able to stop enough pucks to at least excel in the save percentage category, but he isn't even doing that lately. He owns a 0-7-1 record, .885 save percentage and 3.27 GAA during the losing streak.

Smith will start in goal Friday night, taking on the Ducks for his 11th road appearance this season, NHL.com reports.

Smith was without any offensive support in his last game, when he surrendered three goals on 24 shots in a road loss to the Canucks. It doesn't help matters that key regulars like Brad Richardson (leg) and Max Domi (hand) are currently parked on injured reserve. Nonetheless, the Coyotes will be counting on Smith to help them snap an eight-game losing skid against a Ducks squad with the league's third-best power play.

With just seven wins in 23 appearances this year, it would be wise to steer clear of the Canadian veteran if possible given both his struggles individually, as well as the team's, as Arizona currently sits last in the Pacific Division with a paltry 11 victories.

The veteran Smith has yet to record a shutout this season and he's allowed at least three goals in a game a whopping 11 times. Arizona's back line is filled with offensive producers, but it's that same group allowing the 24th-most shots on goal per game (28.6), which generally spells trouble for Smith.

Smith got beaten up by the Rangers on Thursday, allowing five goals on 31 shots for his sixth consecutive loss.

EDGE Analysis

Four of those goals came on the power play, starting with Matt Puempel's tally just 2:24 into the first period. This marks Smith's worst stat line within this losing streak -- in fact, he hadn't given up five goals all season long before Thursday. With wins hard to come by and his ratios starting to fade, Smith's seeing his fantasy appeal dwindle, but he does tend to run hot and cold -- it wouldn't be surprising to see him have better runs (at least in terms of save percentage) down the line.
