Mike Ribeiro rejected a three-year contract offer from the Capitals but he still wants to stay in Washington, according to RDS' Renaud Lavoie.
Ribeiro told The Washington Times that he prefers a "long-term" contract, which to him means at least four years. The center, who has thrived (11 goals, 24 points) in his first year with the Capitals, is in the final season of a five-year, $25 million deal. Handing out a contract that could top that one -- at least in dollar value -- is a risky being that Ribeiro is also 33 years old.

Mike Ribeiro would like to sign a long-term contract to remain with the Washington Capitals, but that hasn't stopped his name from surfacing in trade rumors heading into the deadline next week.
He can become an unrestricted free agent this summer and the Capitals aren't quite sure what to do with him yet. Ribeiro has been a great addition to Washington this season with a team-leading 34 points (10 goals, 24 assists) in 32 games. He has provided the club with some much-needed depth at center, but his price tag may be too high with expensive contracts of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Green already in the fold. Additionally, signing him to a four- or five-year deal that will carry him until he turns 37 or 38 years old may not be appealing either.

Ribeiro has been one of the few bright spots for Washington this year, however his power play marker in the second period wasn't enough to stop the surging Devils. Troy Brouwer delivered a productive night for his fantasy owners his two assists, three shots on goal and 10 penalty minutes in the losing effort.

Mike Ribeiro skated with Alex Ovechkin and Wojtek Wolski has his wingers at practice on Wednesday.
The Capitals own the last overall spot in the NHL with 2-7-1 record and their 2.30 goals per game average ranks them 24th in the league. Ribeiro leads the club with eight assists and 11 points in 10 games, so coach Adam Oates is probably hoping that he can get Ovechkin back on track after his slow start.
