The Canucks inked Leighton to a contract Tuesday after playing with Utica, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports.

The Coyotes traded Leighton and a 2019 fourth-round pick to the Penguins in exchange for Josh Archibald, Sean Maguire and a 2019 sixth-round pick Tuesday.

The Penguins clearly wanted to add a veteran backup so they could send goaltender Tristan Jarry back to the minors to continue his development, and they only needed to part with a pair of organizational depth players and a sixth-round pick to do it. However, it remains to be seen if the team will be able to trust Leighton with the occasional start, as he struggled in limited action last campaign, posting a 2-2-0 record while registering an ugly 3.43 GAA and .870 save percentage in four appearances with the Hurricanes.

Leighton was reassigned to AHL Tuscon on Thursday.

Despite getting called up to the big stage Monday, Leighton didn't see any action in road games versus the Ducks and Golden Knights, respectively. The lanky goalie is best viewed as an emergency option for a Coyotes team that's caught in the cellar of the league standings.
