Leighton will serve as the team's backup netminder behind Cam Ward following Eddie Lack's (concussion) placement on injured reserve Monday. While the veteran netminder does have a history in the NHL, it's unlikely he will see much action between the pipes and his stay stay at the top level will likely be a short one.

Leighton was re-acquired by the Hurricanes on Wednesday, signing a one-year, two-way contract.

The 35-year-old Leighton is a Canes alumnus, having played parts of three seasons in Raleigh from 2007 to 2009. More recently, he was a member of the Blackhawks' organization and enjoyed a stellar season last year at AHL Rockford, posting a 28-8-8 record, 2.44 GAA and .918 save percentage. Now with the Canes, his fantasy value remains limited as he is expected to open the season at AHL Charlotte and serve as backup depth for Cam Ward and Eddie Lack.

Leighton gave up one goal on 17 shots in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Stars. The netminder relieved Scott Darling after the first period.

Leighton was recalled on March 17 due to Corey Crawford's upper-body injury, and unfortunately was pressed into duty with Darling struggling to keep ahold of the Dallas offense. The 34-year-old netminder had not made an NHL appearance since January 2013 with the Flyers, so dusting off is an understatement for Leighton. Even still, it's tough to envision the 1999 sixth-round pick making any sort of impact on Chicago moving forward.

Leighton was recalled Thursday to supply the Blackhawks with additional depth at goaltender while Corey Crawford, who is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, is sidelined. The 34-year-old netminder has been decent in the minors this season, compiling a 26-8-0 record with a 2.44 GAA and .918 save percentage in 46 appearances. The former sixth-round pick will likely be returned to AHL Rockford as soon as Crawford is healthy.

Leighton has been assigned to the AHL.

He hasn't seen NHL ice since the 2012-13 season and even then, he got into just a single game. He's only been an NHL backup once and that was in 2009-10.

Leighton signed a one-year contract with the Blackhawks on Tuesday, ESPN Chicago reports. Leighton hasn't played in the NHL since 2012-13, and he'll likely just provide organizational goaltending depth in the AHL. He had a .920 save percentage and 2.26 GAA in 42 AHL appearances last season.

Leighton, who is considered fourth on the Blackhawks' goalie depth chart, continues to thrive at AHL's Rockford by getting his 14th win by turning aside 22 of the 25 shots on goal by the Texas Stars in the IceHogs 4-3 overtime win on Friday, the Rockford IceHogs website reports. Leighton has been playing well in the AHL, but it does not seem to be helping him when it comes to the Blackhawks. Right now, Leighton is just veteran depth in goalie for Chicago. Leighton has been in goal for 30 games with a 14-10-2-4 with a 2.18 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. For Leighton to get to the big club, there would have to be injuries to a pair of goalies ahead of him be it Corey Crawford, Antti Raanta or Scott Darling.

Leighton cleared waivers and was sent down to Rockford of the AHL on Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reports. Leighton, a former Blackhawk, was re-signed during the off-season and was expected to be headed to Rockford. He is a veteran goalie insurance in case either Corey Crawford or Antti Raanta are injured or if Raanta is very ineffective this season.

Leighton was waived by the Blackhawks on Saturday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports. The 33-year-old Leighton is little more than a depth goalie at this stage of his career, making him no serious threat to claim a roster spot with the Blackhawks. Chicago will go with Antti Raanta as the backup to starter Corey Crawford.

Leighton did not help his cause if he wants to dethrone, Antti Raanta, as the Blackhawks' backup goalie as he saved 17 of 19 shots on goal on Thursday in the 3-2 loss to Detroit. Leighton will need to show more if he wants the backup spot. He is more than likely ticketed to be the starting goalie for Rockford of the AHL. Leighton will probably be in goal on Sunday against Edmonton.
