There is no timetable for a return to action for Palmieri, so for now, this could be a motivational tactic by coach Barry Trotz. While there is no denying that Palmieri has been a bust with only one goal since signing his four-year $20 million contract during the offseason, it's hard to imagine the Islanders making him a healthy scratch for any amount of time. That being said, if the Islanders were to go on a winning streak, perhaps Trotz won't want to fix what isn't broken.

Palmieri's been skating on his own, but he'll need to rejoin practice before returning to game action, and it remains to be seen when that will happen. Unless several skaters are activated off the NHL's COVID-19 protocols list prior to puck drop, the Islanders will likely have to recall a few players from their minor-league affiliate to fill in against the Red Wings.

If Palmieri cannot practice with the team Tuesday, then it would seem unlikely that he would play Wednesday versus the Red Wings or Thursday against the Sabres. The Islanders need any and every healthy forward they can get their hands on after placing Anthony Beavuillier, Oliver Wahlstrom, Zach Parise, and Cal Clutterbuck in the COVID-19 protocols Sunday. If Palmieri can't go Wednesday or Thursday, then his next chance to play would be Saturday versus the Oilers.

Palmieri missed the game Sunday as the Islanders lost to the Golden Knights, 4-3 in a shootout. Palmieri, by any measure, has been a bust so far this season for the Islanders. Palmieri was the significant offseason addition by the Islanders after he signed a four-year $20 million contract. The Islanders also have to be concerned with his play in the defensive end as he has a rating of minus-11, the worst on the team. Palmieri was less than impressive last season for the Islanders after being acquired from the Devils at the trade deadline, as he only had two goals in 17 games. Still, several big tallies during the playoffs convinced general manager Lou Lamoriello to dole out a long-term contract. At this point, the Islanders would like to have a do-over on that decision.

EDGE Analysis
Palmieri was traded to the Islanders from the Devils at the trade deadline last season. Palmieri had some big goals during the playoff run for the Islanders but was unimpressive during the regular season, and that has continued this year. Coach Barry Trotz has tried him, and just about everyone, on different lines, and with the team now down several regulars due to Covid or injury, offense has been extremely hard to come by for the entire team. Palmieri is currently playing with Anthony Beauvillier and Jean-Gabriel Pageau on the second line for the Islanders.
