It'll be interesting to see if coach Joe Sacco sticks with the hot hand against the high-scoring Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

Although we can certainly understand why Colorado would decide to go with Giguere, given his 1.95 GAA and .923 save percentage in 10 games this season, this is still a disappointing turn of events. It would have been nice to see Semyon Varlamov face off against his old teammate, Michal Neuvirth. Of course, that match-up would have been more interesting - not to mention more probable - if Neuvirth and Varlamov weren't both sporting GAAs above 3.

Receiving the start after Semyon Varlamov allowed six goals in a loss on Tuesday, Giguere was very steady in net -- until the third period when it all came unhinged when he allowed three goals on 10 shots. Part of the problem Thursday night was that Calgary was shorthanded eight times (scoring twice) in this game, and they only mustered up 18 shots on net, so Giguere was leaned on pretty heavily. Colorado has now dropped two straight to fall to 13-15-1 on the season.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere will start in Thursday's game versus Calgary. Colorado is hoping that Giguere can help them bounce back from a 6-0 loss against Vancouver on Tuesday. He has a 1.81 GAA and .925 save percentage in nine games this season.

Starting his third consecutive game in place of Semyon Varlamov, Giguere was not at his sharpest in this game and despite the low shot total allowed by Colorado they were unable to come away with a victory. Although he has outplayed the Avs' starter recently, Giguere is unlikely to unseat Varlamov over the long-term.

Avalanche "backup" goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere will get his third consecutive start tonight at home against the San Jose Sharks. Giguere has been a superb backup so far this season and gives the Avalanche much-added stability and veteran experience in both the regular season and playoffs. "He's played very well the past two games and deserves to get back in there," Avs coach Joe Sacco said. Although we don't expect Giguere to steal the starting job from Semyon Varlamov, Giggy has an outside chance of becoming the Avalanche's starter later in the season if the Russian netminder continues to struggle. It's a situation worth monitoring. Giguere is now worth a look in 14-team leagues.

Don't be surprised if J.S. Giguere gets the call Sunday night against the Sharks. It would be the veteran's third start in a row. Giguere was brilliant against the Stars Thursday stopping all 24 shots sent his way in a 3-0 win. Semyon Varlamov has cooled after a quick start to the season and Giggy is on a roll at the moment. Look for Avs' coach Joe Sacco to stay with the hot hand.
