Gardiner picked up two assists in Toronto's 4-3 loss to Ottawa on Wednesday night. They were his first points in 12 games. How does a guy with that much talent go through such a slump? Well, he just doesn't think the game well. But that's OK if he can still put up points. He's a risk right now, but is the kind of guy who can turn it up at any time.

Gardiner, who was frequently in former coach Randy Carlyle's dog house, played his first game after Carlyle's firing and finished minus-4. So much for making a positive impression -- he was out of position and there were too many risky plays. He has talent, but we've always been concerned about his ability to think the game. The next couple weeks will be important for him to change the minds of Leafs' brass.

Gardiner was a healthy scratch for Saturday's game against the Flyers. With just eight points and a minus-11 rating in 30 games, Gardiner has been mostly a letdown for the Leafs this season. He's probably too talented to stick in the press box for long, but perhaps the healthy scratch will serve as a wake-up call for the blueliner. He was replaced in Saturday's lineup by Korbinian Holzer.
