Gardiner, who was frequently in former coach Randy Carlyle's dog house, played his first game after Carlyle's firing and finished minus-4. So much for making a positive impression -- he was out of position and there were too many risky plays. He has talent, but we've always been concerned about his ability to think the game. The next couple weeks will be important for him to change the minds of Leafs' brass.

He hasn't got a clue. He's the worst defenseman I've seen in Toronto for a long, long time. He continually makes the same mental mistakes game in and game out. But Leaf braintrust, ( and I use the term loosely) continue to hold out hope that this guy will figure it out. If he hasn't figured it out by now, he never will. He is one of the main problems for this Leaf team. And until they get his soft defending ass out of there, the Leafs will continue to be an abyss defensively.
