Johnson (lower body) has landed on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 4, per Avalanche coach Patrick Roy.

Johnson will be able to return when healthy since the IR placement is retroactive to his last game played more than seven days ago. Roy added that the transaction "just gives us roster flexibility." Expect an update on Johnson's status once he's able to return to practice with his teammates.

The extent of Johnson's injury remains unclear, although there's a slight glimmer of hope it's not overly serious since he hasn't been completely ruled out of Monday's game. If he's forced to sit out beyond Monday, Nate Guenin could ultimately see extra time on the ice.

Johnson scored his seventh goal of the season and added an assist in Thursday's overtime loss to Chicago.

With Tyson Barrie (illness) out, Johnson stepped up and had a monster game, logging 27:59 of ice time. The 27-year-old has only recorded 16 points this season, but he's been hot of late, tacking on six points (two goals) in his last five games. Given his seven goals and 94 shots on goal on the year, the offensive blueliner can be rolled out with confidence in almost all formats.

Johnson registered a goal and an assist in Monday's loss to the Maple Leafs.

Johnson helped get the scoring started just two minutes into the contest, then later lit the lamp himself to knot up the score at three before Toronto exploded for four goals in the final frame. The defenseman has now worked his way onto the scoresheet in consecutive games but has just 13 points on the season.

The assist came on Francois Beauchemin's deflected shot that got past Tuukka Rask late in the first period. The Avs offense appears on the verge of breaking out, so Johnson figures to get more chances to pitch in.

The former first overall pick was off to an impressive start last year when a knee injury took him out for a large portion of the season. Johnson started the 2015-16 season with a bang, however, tallying three points in the first two games. Since then, the anchor of the defense hasn't recorded a point while averaging 22 minutes of ice time.
