Smith will miss his second consecutive game Friday against San Jose, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith missed Tuesday's contest with an illness, but strong play by Jakub Kindl in his absence has kept him out of Friday's lineup as a healthy scratch. Smith was rotated out of the lineup for two games earlier in the season, but played the next eight games before his illness, so it shouldn't be long before he gets back on the ice.

Smith is dealing with an illness and may miss Tuesday's game against the Capitals, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was held out of practice Monday, so it looks likely that the illness will cost him at least one game. If he does miss Tuesday's tilt, his next chance to slot back into the lineup will come Friday against the Sharks. Jakub Kindl and Alexei Marchenko figure to comprise the third defensive pairing if he's forced to miss any time.

The Red Wings re-signed Smith to a two-year contract on Tuesday, the team's official site reports.
Per MLive.com's Ansar Khan, Smith's new deal is worth $2.75 million per season. The 26-year-old blueliner is coming off a season in which he suited up in a career-high 76 games for the Wings, notching 13 points and 68 penalty minutes. He's only an option in deeper formats for now, however, especially given his limited power play opportunities.

Smith will be a healthy scratch for Game 1 of the Red Wings' first-round playoff series with the Lightning, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Coach Mike Babcock scratched Smith for last Saturday's regular-season finale after the defenseman received a costly penalty in the Red Wings' prior game, and it appears he hasn't been forgiven for the mistake. Alexei Marchenko will make his playoff debut in his place, but it still seems possible that Smith will earn his way back into the lineup later in the series.
