This was a huge win for San Jose, now in a three-way tie for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. Niemi obviously will be a key to their chances with seven games left, but he hasn't been too sharp over his last four starts, giving up three or more in three of them.

The netminder allowed a first-period goal, but was perfect afterward, making 23 saves over the final two periods. This was just Niemi's second win over his last eight starts. Overall, he has a 27-18-9 record, 2.41 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. San Jose is a point below the Western Conference playoff threshold.

Niemi is a disconcerting 1-3-3 in his last seven games and 4-8-4 in his last 16 contests. The odds still seem in the Sharks' favor to at least make the playoffs, although losses like these won't help.
