Shaw, who was given a brief two-period sojourn to the third line during Montreal's previous game, returned to the team's most productive scoring line Thursday. And that's good news. Since joining the line with Max Domi and Jonathan Drouin, Shaw has 14 points (seven goal, seven assists) over the last 14 games, including an assist while skating on the third line. The 27-year-old forward is zeroing in on new career highs in scoring. He's also kept the dumb penalties to a minimum, picking up just two minor penalties during his time with Domi and Drouin.

Shaw assisted on a power-play goal and had two shots, one blocked shot, a minor penalty and four hits in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Boston.

With 11 points through 18 games, Shaw's making the most of this opportunity thus far.

It was just his second goal and first since opening night, ending a 10-game drought. It was his first point of any kind since the second game of the season. Shaw has been saddled on the fourth line for much of the season, but was liberated to the second line Thursday, skating with the hot Domi and Jonathan Drouin, Montreal's most productive pairing. Shaw's greatest contributions thus far have been taking bad penalties, and he leads the Canadiens with 18 PIM. If he stays on the second line, Shaw may be a source of offense.

Shaw had three shots, one blocked shot and carried a minus-1 over 15:20 of ice time in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay.

EDGE Analysis

Shaw was a healthy scratch for a couple of games before re-entering the active lineup following Paul Bryon succumbing to a lower-body injury. Byron has missed two games and will miss at least the next two, so Shaw will likely remain on the active roster for games Monday (Islanders) and Tuesday (Rangers). He played on the first power-play unit, getting 4:16 of ice time Saturday. That says more about the state of the Canadiens' power play than it does coach Claude Julien's confidence in Shaw as a sniper. Montreal is zero for its last 15 power-play opportunities and currently ranks 26th at 14.3 percent.

Shaw, who has been a healthy scratch the last two games, could return to the active lineup Thursday against Washington, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Canadiens lost Paul Byron to a lower-body injury during Tuesday's loss to the Stars, which potentially opens a spot for Shaw. Tuesday's other spare forward, Nikita Scherbak, was sent to AHL Laval following the game for a conditioning assignment, so there's a possibility the Habs bring up a forward if Byron's injury is expected to linger. Coach Claude Julien did not have an update on Byron following the game.
