Coach Brian Flores said Friday that deciding the Dolphins' starting quarterback for Week 1 became "harder" after the team's third preseason game, Alain Poupart of the team's official site reports.

EDGE Analysis

Fitzpatrick started Thursday's preseason win over the Jaguars, completing 12 of 18 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. The veteran signal-caller struggled to move the offense during the first half, but rallied to produce a touchdown drive in the third quarter capped by an 8-yard pass to Mark Walton. Josh Rosen then entered and compiled a 99-yard touchdown drive of his own, which featured a number of impressive scrambles and throws including a 39-yard connection to Isaiah Ford. Fitzpatrick has maintained a steady course for the Week 1 gig since minicamp, and may remain the favorite for the job, but it's not difficult to imagine a scenario in which Rosen lines up under center early in the regular season.

Fitzpatrick completed 12 of 18 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown in a little more than a half of work during Thursday's 22-7 win over Jacksonville.

EDGE Analysis

The final tally looks solid, but there was a point early in the second half in which Miami had more penalty yards than offensive yards. The poor first-half play led Fitzpatrick to return for the opening drive of the second half during which he connected with Nick O'Leary for a catch and run of 30 yards, found Mike Gesicki downfield for a gain of 29, and then dropped it off to Mark Walton for an eight-yard score. Excitement for that final drive will need to be tempered as it came against reserves. Fitzpatrick probably didn't do enough Thursday to garner too much confidence as the Week 1 starter, especially with Josh Rosen making some big throws in relief, but the veteran has been tracking toward a Week 1 start for months now and Thursday seemed to maintain the status quo.

Coach Brian Flores clarified that Fitzpatrick starting the third preseason game does not mean he will start Week 1, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Dolphins have split first-team reps between Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen, with the latter getting the start in Friday's preseason loss to Tampa Bay. Both quarterbacks have struggled through two exhibition games, seemingly leaving the competition up for grabs. Fitzpatrick is expected to get the start Thursday against Jacksonville, likely playing into the second or third quarter before he's replaced by Rosen.

Fitzpatrick completed three of nine passes for 20 yards during Friday's 16-14 loss to Tampa Bay. He added a two-yard run during the contest.

EDGE Analysis

Fitzpatrick, though listed atop the depth chart, didn't get involved until after half time as Miami let Josh Rosen lead the charge early. The results were rough, with the Dolphins punting on all three of Fitzpatrick's drives. It isn't as if Rosen set the world on fire either, leading Miami to two field goals on six drives. Miami is in a position in which it is evaluating its future at the position. Fitzpatrick has obviously done enough in the offseason to earn his spot at the top of the depth chart. He didn't do anything Friday to widen the gap Friday, but at the same time, Rosen did little to close it.

Fitzpatrick is in line to play with Miami's first-team offense in Thursday night's preseason opener versus the Falcons, Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post reports.

EDGE Analysis

With Fitzpatrick slated to start the contest, Josh Rosen is in line to work with the second team Thursday. The assignment is indicative of the fact that Fitzpatrick remains atop the Dolphins' QB depth chart at this stage, but that status is not set in stone, with the competition between him and Rosen, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, ongoing.

Fitzpatrick is listed ahead of Josh Rosen on the Dolphins' first preseason depth chart, Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post reports.

EDGE Analysis

Miami beat writers have reported Fitzpatrick as the favorite for the Week 1 job all offseason, so it's no surprise to see the 36-year-old veteran atop the team's initial depth chart. Rosen picked up momentum last week and progressed towards closing the gap, according to Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, but by all accounts would need to come out on fire in the preseason in order to usurp Fitzpatrick for the Week 1 gig. Regardless of which quarterback starts the season opener, it's probable that the rebuilding Dolphins will elect to hand Rosen the reigns at some point in 2019 in order to evaluate the 22-year-old's potential.

Coach Brian Flores puts Fitzpatrick ahead of Josh Rosen so far, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports. "From a quarterback standpoint, it's pretty clear to me that Ryan Fitzpatrick is leading the way," Flores said Tuesday.

EDGE Analysis

The coach's analysis is consistent with reports from Miami beat writers dating back to the offseason program. Rosen still has time to build his case and will likely make starts at some point anyway, but Fitzpatrick is emerging as a clear favorite for the Week 1 gig.

Fitzpatrick took the Dolphins' first QB snap of training camp, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

EDGE Analysis

Fitzpatrick also handled most of the reps with the starters throughout the offseason program, though Josh Rosen got his chances. The quarterback battle will continue in the coming weeks, and there's a good chance both players make starts during the upcoming season.

Fitzpatrick continues to receive most of the first-team snaps at OTAs, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

The rebuilding Dolphins have every incentive to take a look at Josh Rosen this upcoming season, but that doesn't mean they'll hand him the Week 1 starting job. That said, Fitzpatrick's early advantage in non-contact spring practices doesn't carry a lot of weight. The real test will come in August during training-camp practices and preseason games.

Fitzpatrick took first-team reps at quarterback during OTAs on Tuesday, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.

EDGE Analysis

While the Dolphins acquired young quarterback Josh Rosen via trade during the draft, Fitzpatrick is going to get every chance to compete with the youngster. There's no word yet if Fitzpatrick is the favorite, or if Tuesday's gesture was made due to the fact that he's the more tenured competitor. Even if Fitzpatrick does end up winning the job for Week 1, he may not hold onto it for long, as Miami may want to see what it has with its young quarterback on a roster going through a rebuild.
