Despite signing a one-year contract with the Patriots during training camp, Wayne did not play a regular season snap in 2015 after failing to make the 53-man roster. He was on pace for a strong season in 2013 with Indianapolis after recording 38 receptions through the first seven games of the season, but a torn ACL derailed that campaign and left him somewhat limited in 2014 at age 36. Regardless, Wayne will go down as one of the most prolific receivers of the past two decades as his 1,070 career catches place him seventh all-time--just eight receptions behind Terrell Owens.

News of Wayne's release first came as a surprise, given that he agreed to a contract with a $450,000 signing bonus on Aug. 24. It now seems the parting of ways may have been his idea, in which case he'll return most of the bonus. It may be that Wayne just doesn't think he's up to the task of playing another season, but no specific reason for his departure has been provided. It'll be surprising if he plays in the NFL again, as this was seemingly his final effort at obtaining a second ring.

The transaction hasn't officially been announced, but with Wayne not at Saturday's practice, it's pretty clear that he's being released. The contract he recently signed includes $500,000 in guaranteed money, yet the Patriots seemingly reached the same conclusion as the Colts: Wayne has nothing left to offer. This might taken as a good sign for Brandon LaFell's (foot) Week 1 availability, but in reality, it's probably not related.

Wayne caught two passes (10 targets) for 24 yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Giants.

Having just signed with the Patriots last week, Wayne got an unusual amount of work for the final preseason game. Even though he was catching passes from Ryan Lindley, Thursday's showing probably didn't help Wayne's bid to have a significant role in the Week 1 offense. It remains to be seen how involved the 36-year-old will be.

Wayne played early in the game with Tom Brady, and appeared out of sync with the veteran QB on his only target, as the pass arrived earlier than Wayne expected. Once Wayne is up to speed (he just signed with New England on Monday), he should be a valuable member of the team's wideout corps, although it remains to be seen how much fantasy value he'll hold.

However, he is coming off career-low 12.2 yards per reception, and his average of 51.9 yards per game was his worst mark since 2002, which was likely a prime motivator for the Colts to part ways with the veteran wideout. The Patriots have sustained several injuries to their receiving corps recently, with Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell, Aaron Dobson and Brian Tyms all missing Saturday's preseason game due to a variety of ailments and features an injury-prone possession receiver in Danny Amendola. Wayne will, however, likely need to wait until Week 5 before he can begin receiving balls from star quarterback Tom Brady, who will serve a season-opening four-game suspension. Over the course of his career, Wayne has caught 1,070 passes for 14,345 yards and 82 touchdowns.
