Impending free agent SS LaRon Landry is expected to have to settle for a short-term, "prove-it" deal on the open market. Landry is recovering from Achilles' surgery and also landed on injured reserve in mid-December with a groin ailment. At age 27, he's a dominant strong safety when healthy but rarely has been 100 percent over the past two seasons. The Skins seem unlikely to consider slapping Landry with the franchise tag.

Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that SS LaRon Landry will undergo surgery on his damaged Achilles. Reed Doughty will start over O.J. Atogwe at free safety this week, with DeJon Gomes taking Landry's spot. Shanahan indicated that Landry's Achilles is not torn, but "it's been quite sore" going back to the 2010 season. The procedure was recommended after Landry visited with a specialist on Wednesday.

The Redskins will place SS LaRon Landry (groin, Achilles) on injured reserve, ending his season. The Redskins came into the season thinking Landry and free agent pickup O.J Atogwe would be dominant. Thanks to injuries, backups DeJon Gomes and Reed Doughty have logged tons of playing time. Landry has the potential to be dominant when healthy, but has appeared in just 17 games in the last two seasons. The impending free agent's future with the Redskins is unclear.

Coach Mike Shanahan hinted that SS LaRon Landry (groin, Achilles) may be done for the season. Landry, a difference-maker when healthy, has appeared in just 17 games over the last two seasons thanks to an assortment of injuries. That's left Reed Doughty to pick up the slack. Landry will be an unrestricted free agent after the season and the franchise tag has already been suggested as a possibility.

The Washington Examiner's John Keim believes there's a "real possibility" the Redskins use the franchise tag on SS LaRon Landry this offseason. Making $3.7 million in his walk year, Landry has been limited to just eight games by injury after appearing in only nine in 2010. When he has been on the field, he's played well, grading out as Pro Football Focus' 16th best safety. Landry returning to Washington on a one-year "prove it" deal, even at the price of the franchise tag, would make sense for both sides.

The Redskins have ruled out SS LaRon Landry (groin) for Week 14. The Skins will turn to coverage liability Reed Doughty, which could be problematic against New England's No. 2-ranked passing offense. Landry is out indefinitely, and the Redskins have given no timetable for him to return.

Although SS LaRon Landry (groin) is without a timetable for a return, the Redskins are not yet considering placing him on injured reserve. "It's kind of hard to tell (when Landry will be back)," coach Mike Shanahan said. "I just know that he's had some injuries and we'll just keep our fingers crossed that he can rehab and get ready to play." Landry has been limited to eight games as he's fought through Achilles, hamstring and groin ailments. An unrestricted free agent at season's end, Landry will likely have trouble landing a multi-year deal.

The Redskins have ruled out SS LaRon Landry (groin) for Week 13. Landry suffered what is believed to be a significant groin strain in last week's win over the Seahawks. Reed Doughty will get the start against the Jets.

Redskins SS LaRon Landry left Sunday's game against the Seahawks in the first half with a groin injury. Landry is questionable to return, but is jogging on the sidelines. He's dealt with Achilles' tendon and hamstring injuries already this season.

Redskins declared SS LaRon Landry (Achilles) inactive for Sunday's game against the Cowboys. It's a blow to the Redskins' defense, but at least they'll have FS O.J. Atogwe (knee). Right tackle Jamaal Brown (groin) is also active. Their other inactives: WR Santana Moss, WR Niles Paul, G Maurice Hurt, LB Keyaron Fox, LB Markus White and CB Domonique Johnson.
