The Washington Post gets "the sense" that SS LaRon Landry (Achilles', hamstring) isn't close to returning at full strength anytime soon.

Landry plans to take it "a day at a time" after Week 1 when assessing his return. Players coming off Achilles' injuries often suffer setbacks to other parts of their legs, and Landry is in that boat. Reed Doughty will be the Redskins' starting free safety indefinitely, with O.J. Atogwe on the strong side.

Landry also appeared to blame his slow recovery on team doctors in a Tuesday tweet. "Uuhhh oo it ain't my fault...blame the genius circus staff for the rush. Wouldve been there 2wks ago. Im (sorry) but saga (continues)." The message has since been deleted. HC Mike Shanahan said on Monday that a decision on Landry's status would not be reached until "just before game time," but all signs are pointing toward him being inactive.

Coach Mike Shanahan doesn't plan to decide SS LaRon Landry's (Achilles', hamstring) Week 1 status until just before game time. "He is making progress," Shanahan said. "We'll have to evaluate him and Chris (Cooley) throughout the whole week and make a decision right up to game-time." Whereas our hunch is that Cooley (knee) will give it a go against the Giants, we'd be somewhat surprised if Landry played. Perhaps the Skins will ease him in with a three-safety roation of Landry, O.J. Atogwe, and Reed Doughty.

It was good news that Landry avoided the PUP/reserve list on Saturday, but that doesn't mean it's not still a possibility. After Chris Horton and Anderson Russell were cut yesterday, the Redskins would have only DeJon Gomes available behind Reed Doughty and O.J. Atogwe if Landry can't give it a go in Week 1.

Landry also won't play at all in the preseason, as he's been declared out for the exhibition finale. The Redskins' goal is to have him back by Week 1. If Landry can't make it, Reed Doughty will be the first-team free safety with O.J. Atogwe sliding over to strong and Chris Horton in the third safety role.

The Redskins will still consider activating SS LaRon Landry for Week 1 even if he does not play in Washington's preseason finale on Thursday. "You would sure like him to play in this last preseason game to get some reps, especially when he missed the second half of the season," HC Mike Shanahan said on Saturday. "But does he have to (play to be available in Week 1)? No. But it would sure help." There's a real chance Landry is forced to begin the season on the PUP list, but for now it's still not the most likely outcome.

Per the Washington Post, "now Landry's availability for the regular season opener could be in doubt." He's a red-flag pick in all IDP leagues.
