Thompson ran the ball six times for 23 yards and hauled in one of two targets for four yards in Monday's loss to the Chiefs.
EDGE Analysis
Monday marked the first time this season that Thompson failed to find the end zone, as the pass catching back never seemed to find his groove against a tough Chiefs defense. What's even stranger is the lack of targets Thompson received through the air Monday night, especially considering he averaged 8.5 targets over the first three games of the season. The Florida State product will look to bounce back after the Redskins' bye this week.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden reiterated Monday that when healthy, Rob Kelley (ribs) will act as the team's lead running back and suggested that Thompson won't be in store for a larger role in the offense, John Keim of ESPN.com reports. "[Thompson is] going to keep pushing me for [more carries], but he's not going to get them," Gruden said.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson has been the Redskins' top weapon through the first three contests, averaging 8.5 yards per carry on 14 totes and amassing 231 receiving yards on his way to four scores. For all Thompson's success, the Redskins' coaching staff is cognizant that the fifth-year back is at his best when he's deployed as a pass catcher or change-of-pace runner rather than as a chain mover between the tackles. Because the latter situations are where most of the carries will come from, either Kelley or Samaje Perine (hand) looks bound to outpace Thompson in touches most weeks, but Thompson shouldn't have much trouble besting them in terms of efficiency. Even so, it's unlikely that Thompson will continue ripping off big plays to the extent he has through the first three games, making it somewhat risky for fantasy owners to rely on him as a viable weekly option.

Thompson rushed eight times for 38 yards and caught six of seven targets for 150 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 27-10 victory over the Raiders.
EDGE Analysis
Always known to be a receiving-oriented tailback, Thompson appears to be taking his game to new heights in 2017 behind his team-leading 19 targets in the passing game (tied with Terrelle Pryor). However, fantasy owners need to keep in mind he's topped 100 scrimmage yards only once in his previous 36 games leading up to Week 2 of this season, which suggests this statistical explosion is unlikely to persist.

Thompson rushed three times for 77 yards and two touchdowns and caught three of seven targets for 31 yards during Sunday's 27-20 overtime win over the Rams.
EDGE Analysis
After rushing for a seven-yard score to start the second quarter, Thompson broke a 61-yard touchdown run with just 1:44 left in the first half. He wasn't as effective in the passing game as usual, but the third-down back has now found the end zone three times through two weeks, and his role could be extended moving forward. Rob Kelley (ribs) left Sunday's game, and he was unable to return. If Kelley misses time, Thompson could see more snaps, and especially if rookie Samaje Perine struggles. Perine rushed 21 times for just 67 yards (3.2 yards per carry) Sunday.

Thompson rushed the ball three times for four yards and hauled in four of five targets for 52 yards and a touchdown.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson was one of the lone bright spots in an otherwise disappointing opening week performance for the Redskins. While the tailback didn't make an impact in the run game, he did show a clear connection with Kirk Cousins as a receiver. His 29-yard score showcased his ability to make moves after the catch, as he somehow managed to avoid a trio of tacklers while staying upright on his way to the end zone. It was a fairly standard performance from the third-down back and helped prove why the Redskins inked him to a two-year extension earlier in the week.

Thompson and the Redskins agreed Tuesday to a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2019 season, Master Tesfatsion of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Injuries stunted Thompson's development early in his career, but after enjoying better health the last two seasons, he's emerged as a trusted check-down option out of the backfield for quarterback Kirk Cousins. With 74 receptions on his ledger over the past two campaigns, Thompson will once again enter 2017 as the Redskins' third-down back, and the contract extension speaks to the faith the organization has in him in that role.

Thompson recorded three carries for nine yards and hauled in one of two targets for 27 yards in Sunday's preseason win over the Bengals.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson only managed to 16 plays on offense Sunday, but his 27-yard reception was the key jump-starter in a drive that ended with a Dustin Hopkins field goal. The fifth-year back could see some action in Thursday's preseason finale against the Buccaneers, but don't expect him to be on the field for an extended amount of time.

Thompson carried twice for one yard but brought in all five of his targets for 52 yards in Saturday's 21-17 preseason loss to the Packers.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson served as a valuable safety valve for Kirk Cousins on more than one occasion while the offense sputtered during the first four drives. He also ripped off an impressive 29-yard reception midway through the second quarter and was the team's leader in receptions while tying multiple players for the high-water mark in targets. Thompson should once again have a robust role as a passing-down back in the coming campaign, while also seeing a modest number of carries.

Thompson had two carries for 10 yards in Thursday's preseason opener against Baltimore.
EDGE Analysis
The expected battle between Rob Kelley and Samaje Perine is getting all the hype, but it's possible the two end up splitting early down work, whereas Thompson will have the passing down job all to himself. While the role doesn't come with huge upside, it arguably makes him a safer option than either of his backfield mates in PPR formats, particularly if Kelley and Perine's battle continues into the regular season.

Thompson could be in line for extended reps this season, John Keim of ESPN.com reports. "I have a feeling I might get a little more this year," Thompson said. "I just see how the workouts and everything are going, when we're working together as a group."
EDGE Analysis
With a budding battle between Rob Kelley and rookie Samaje Perine for the top running back spot, Thompson will quietly assume the third-down responsibilities for the Redskins in 2017. Playing on a one-year contract, the veteran will have to prove his value this season, which won't be hard to do if he continues to see increased reps on offense. Thompson is clearly the best pass-catcher in the backfield and was productive last scene with his reps, averaging 7.1 yards per reception and 5.2 yards per rush. If either Kelley or Perine struggle, look for Washington to rely on Thompson as a safety blanket.
