Thompson took five carries for 65 yards and caught six of seven targets for 63 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 24-6 win over the Cardinals.
EDGE Analysis
In addition to leading his team in catches and targets, Thompson somehow averaged 13 yards per carry without breaking off a gain or more than 16 yards. He said at the beginning of training camp that he wouldn't be the best version of himself early in the season, but he appeared to be just that Sunday afternoon, showing no lingering effects from last year's severe leg/ankle injury. It was particularly encouraging to see Thompson have such a large role in a game that featured just 30 pass attempts from Alex Smith and 26 carries for Adrian Peterson. Coach Jay Gruden surely will find ways to keep Thompson involved during a Week 2 matchup with the porous Indianapolis defense.

Thompson (leg) isn't listed on the injury report for Week 1 in Arizona, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
EDGE Analysis
Despite being cleared for full participation in the early days of training camp, Thompson was held out for the entire preseason to ensure he made it to Week 1 without any issues. His availability for the opener has never truly been in question, but he did acknowledge in late July that it likely will take him some time to regain his top form. Thompson suffered a fractured fibula in Week 11 last year, with the injury accompanied by some ligament damage around his ankle. He figures to handle most of the passing-down snaps while Adrian Peterson serves as the lead ballcarrier.

Coach Jay Gruden said Thompson (leg) looks "fantastic" in practice, Kareem Copeland of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson has been held out for the entire preseason despite taking part in practice since the beginning of training camp. There hasn't ever been much doubt about his Week 1 availability, but the running back did acknowledge that he may not be the best version of himself right away. Thompson saw his 2017 season end in November when he suffered a fractured fibula accompanied by ligament damage around his ankle. He's locked in as Washington's passing-down back, with the potential for some big PPR outings when the team goes pass-heavy.

Coach Jay Gruden admitted Thompson may not suit up this preseason, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Redskins are being especially cautious with the veteran running back, whose 2017 season ended Nov. 19 due to a broken right fibula. In a backfield beset by injuries yet again, the approach is understandable, but getting game action before the regular season likely would be a boost to Thompson's confidence. When (or if) he's healthy, he'll take on a third-down role alongside whichever of Rob Kelley, Samaje Perine (ankle) and Adrian Peterson is healthy at the time.

Thompson (leg) won't play in Thursday's preseason game versus the Jets, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
EDGE Analysis
Once again, Thompson will take a seat, only this time it's the first outing without Derrius Guice, who tore his ACL last week. The backfield will thus be composed of Rob Kelley, Samaje Perine, Kapri Bibbs and Byron Marshall in this exhibition. It remains to be seen whether or not Thompson will make an appearance before Week 1 following a vicious broken fibula suffered Nov. 19 of last season.

Thompson (leg) won't suit up for Thursday's preseason contest at New England, Kimberley A. Martin of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Redskins dabbled with an increased workload for Thompson last season due to injuries and ineffectiveness elsewhere in the backfield, only to lose him for the year due to a fractured right fibula Nov. 19. His practice reps in training camp predictably have been limited, especially after he expressed wariness in late July about cutting on his surgically repaired leg. It's unclear if he'll take the field at all during exhibition season, but once the regular campaign kicks off he'll have to contend with rookie Derrius Guice along with holdover Samaje Perine for pass-catching work.

Thompson took about 12 reps in his return to full-team work at Tuesday's practice, but he said afterward that he's still a little wary of making cuts on his surgically repaired right leg, Jake Kring-Schreifels of Redskins.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
While his return to 11-on-11 drills came off without a hitch, Thompson actually sounded a bit discouraged after practice, noting that he may not be his usual self until he's a full year removed from the fractured fibula he suffered in November, per ESPN.com's John Keim. The 27-year-old said this has been the most difficult rehab process of his football career -- an interesting statement from someone who dealt with a torn ACL and two fractured vertebrae at Florida State. While his Week 1 availability doesn't seem to be in question, Thompson will probably need some time to regain the explosive form that led to 13.1 yards per catch last season. He still figures to be a fixture on passing downs, so his 2016 production is a reasonable baseline for expectations.

Thompson (leg) is expected to get some work in full-team drills at Tuesday's practice, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
While he avoided the PUP list to start training camp, Thompson seems to have been limited to non-contact work so far. He's about eight months removed from surgery on a fractured right fibula, and the rehab process has taken a bit longer than expected, perhaps because the injury was accompanied by ligament damage. Regardless, Thompson is on the right track for Week 1 and could even make an appearance at some point during the preseason. He's locked in as Washington's passing-down back, coming off a season with career-high marks for scrimmage yards (804) and touchdowns (six) in only 10 games. It will be tough for Thompson to match last year's per-game output, as a few long gains were the impetus for his breakout season prior to the injury. He had modest averages of 6.4 carries and 3.9 catches per game.

Thompson (broken fibula) indicated that he'll be a limited participant from the outset of training camp, SiriusXM NFL Radio reports. "I'm feeling pretty good right now, I will start practicing [with] the guys from day one but just taking it slowly....the focus is to really be ready by that first regular season game," the running back said.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson avoided being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, so it seems the Redskins also expect him to be available in some capacity for the start of training camp. Fracturing his fibula Nov. 19, Thompson is roughly eight months removed from surgery and, considering he had an estimated 4-to-6 month timeline to recover, is clearly not trying to rush himself back onto the field. We'll get a better feel for where he's at when training camp opens July 26.

Coach Jay Gruden indicated Wednesday that Thompson (lower leg) has made "unbelievable progress" and he anticipates him being healthy for training camp, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson missed the final six games of the 2017 campaign due to a fractured fibula suffered in November. The team hadn't previously revealed a timeline for his return to action, but Gruden's comments put a positive spin on his recovery and outlook to begin 2018. When healthy, Thompson should return to the primary pass-catching role out of the backfield for Washington. However, the addition of rookie running back Derrius Guice in the second round threatens to cut significantly into the workload of Thompson, Samaje Peine and Rob Kelley (ankle) this season. Thompson may be least impacted by the addition given Guice's reported struggles as a receiver, potentially affording him more playing time than his counterparts.
