Thompson suffered a fractured fibula during Sunday's 34-31 overtime loss at New Orleans, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
EDGE Analysis
While pass blocking for quarterback Kirk Cousins in the third quarter, Thompson's right leg was rolled up on. requiring an air cast and a cart to remove him from the field. Surgery will be ordered up in the coming days, but it's unclear if the do-it-all back will miss the rest of the season. The Redskins have already lost Rob Kelley (ankle) for the season, meaning Samaje Perine can be counted on to receive a substantial role moving forward. Granted, the team is a candidate to bolster depth behind Perine, as it did by signing Byron Marshall off the Eagles' practice squad last week.

Thompson was carted off the field with an air cast on his leg during Sunday's game at New Orleans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson's leg was rolled up on by Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins, per Larry Holder of The New Orleans Times-Picayune. Due to the likely severity of the injury, Thompson may not return to the contest, ending his day with four carries for 17 yards and a 16-yard touchdown reception on his only target. With Rob Kelley (ankle) out for the year, the Redskins backfield has been whittled down to Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall.

Thompson could see more big-play opportunities than normal Sunday against the Saints, who have allowed 165 yards on screen plays to running backs this season, ranking 27th in the NFL in that category, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
With 38 receptions for 494 yards and three touchdowns in nine games, Thompson has been one of the NFL's preeminent backfield receivers this season, but he's struggled to find the end zone of late. Thompson has failed to find paydirt in three consecutive games, but that could change Sunday with a matchup against a Saints squad that has quieted opposing receivers, but has proven more vulnerable on short-yardage passes. In addition to the favorable receiving conditions, Thompson could take on an elevated role as a runner with Rob Kelley (ankle) landing on injured reserve earlier this week, though rookie Samaje Perine is expected to handle the majority of the carries for Washington.

Thompson rushed for 26 yards on nine attempts and added 41 yards on three catches in Sunday's 38-30 loss to Minnesota.
EDGE Analysis
With Rob Kelley (ankle) exiting the game early, Thompson saw his second highest total of carries this season. More of a scat back than every-down runner, Thompson is likely to see an uptick in carries should Kelley miss time, but expect more of his production to come through the air than on the ground. In the two previous games Kelley has missed this season, Thompson has been held to 71 yards on 24 carries. He snagged 10 passes for 255 yard and a touchdown in those games, however, as Washington used the passing game to supplement the run. Whether or not Kelley is healthy for next week, Thompson remains a strong factor in PPR leagues.

Thompson rushed four times for 20 yards and caught four of six pass attempts for 11 yards in Sunday's 17-14 win over the Seahawks.
EDGE Analysis
He was the Redskins' leading rusher in the contest, despite seeing 10 fewer carries than Rob Kelley. Additionally, Thompson was Kirk Cousins' second most-targeted pass catcher for the second straight week, this time behind Vernon Davis. While the FSU product's size may keep him from ever completely usurping early-down or goal-line work from Kelley, Thompson ought to see at least a few more opportunities as long as he proves the more effective back.

Thompson rushed four times for 18 yards and caught eight of nine pass attempts for 76 yards in Washington's 33-19 loss to the Cowboys on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson finished second on the team in targets and receptions behind only Jamison Crowder. The 27-year-old also finished with just one fewer yard than Rob Kelley despite receiving half the carries. Although Kelley got the start and a rushing touchdown, the former Seminole is clearly the running back to own in Washington and will likely be depended upon heavily in Week 9 at Seattle.

Thompson, who exited late in the Redskins' 34-24 loss to the Eagles on Monday with a toe injury, was ultimately able to return, Rick Maese of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson ended up missing just a few snaps due to the issue, so it doesn't look to be anything that will hamper him too much heading into the Week 8 game against the Cowboys. After amassing 138 total yards on 20 touches in the Week 6 win over the 49ers, Thompson saw his role decline a bit with Rob Kelley (ankle) cleared to return from a one-game absence Monday. Thompson compiled a more modest 64 total yards on 12 touches, but did reach the end zone in the first half.

With Redskins head coach Jay Gruden stating Friday that he expects Rob Kelley (ankle) to play and start in Monday's game against the Eagles, Thompson is expected to see a downturn in his snaps and touches out of the backfield, Rick Maese of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
While Kelley was sidelined due to injury in Week 3 and Week 6, Thompson came through with his two most productive outings of the season, turning in a combined 255 receiving yards, 71 rushing yards and a touchdown in those contests. Kelley's return is unlikely to have much effect on Thompson's role as the top pass catcher out of the backfield, but expect Thompson's carry total to drop back into the single digits after he toted the rock a season-high 16 times in last Sunday's win over the 49ers. Kelley's impending return could also result in a reduced snap count for rookie Samaje Perine.

Thompson nabbed four of five targets for 105 yards and added 33 yards on the ground on 16 carries in Sunday's 26-24 win over the 49ers.
EDGE Analysis
It was the third time in five games that Thompson topped over 100 total yards, including the second time in which he topped 100 yards receiving. The dynamic scat back leads Washington in both rushing and receiving yards five games into the season and, though he has been held scoreless in back-to-back games after four scores in the first three weeks of the season, he figures to get more opportunities down the stretch. Thompson's effectiveness in limited opportunities to start the season helped incentivize Washington's coaches to giving him the ball for a career-high 20 touches on Sunday. Expect the team to continue turning to its most viable weapon.
