CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Redskins have already reached out to free agent TE Chris Cooley, and a re-signing is expected "shortly." The Redskins need a tight end after Fred Davis' torn left Achilles' tendon, and Cooley has been turning down offers from other teams in hopes of rejoining the only team for which he's ever played. So in that respect, the reunion makes perfect sense. Cooley doesn't have much left in his tank, but he knows the Shanahans' offense and is a functional all-around tight end. Expect Cooley's signing to be announced early this week, corresponding with Davis' placement on year-ending injured reserve.

CBS' Jason La Canfora confirms the Redskins have "reached out" to free agent TE Chris Cooley in the wake of Fred Davis' season-ending injury, and will likely finalize a deal "shortly." It makes perfect sense, as Cooley is well-versed in coach Mike Shanahan's offense, and has had two extra months to heal up coming off his injury-marred 2011. It's extremely unlikely Cooley re-emerges as a factor in fantasy leagues, but he shouldn't need more than a few days to get up to speed on the offense, and will likely be ready to play by next Sunday.

The Washington Times suggests the Redskins re-sign free agent TE Chris Cooley to replace Fred Davis. Cooley has received several minimum-salary contract offers to sign with teams since his August 28 release by the Redskins, but has been holding out for a chance to start. The Redskins could give him that opportunity in the wake of Davis' torn left Achilles' tendon. Cooley is still a relatively young 30 years old, but his speed has been sapped by recurring knee problems.

Free agent TE Chris Cooley's return "does not appear imminent" after a Thursday meeting with Redskins GM Bruce Allen. Coach Mike Shanahan indicated that the Redskins will keep Cooley on speed dial in case one of their tight ends goes down. "It was a good conversation," Shanahan said. "Chris is such a big part of this organization. He's looked at his options. We talked about things that could happen throughout the year."

Redskins GM Bruce Allen indicated that the team is interested in re-signing free agent Chris Cooley, and the Skins will hold "a meeting next week" regarding the potential reunion. It's unclear whether the meeting is of an internal variety, or whether it's with Cooley and his player rep. The Redskins probably don't want to sign Cooley prior to Week 1 because doing so would leave them on the hook guaranteeing his entire 2012 base salary. Cooley would return as Fred Davis' primary backup, in all likelihood. They also have Niles Paul and blocker Logan Paulsen.

The Washington Post believes Chris Cooley could be traded, but not "outright cut." Cooley is due a burdensome $3.8 million for a backup tight end, but has taken consistent reps at fullback this preseason. Nevertheless, if he's not "outright cut," it will almost certainly be because he agreed to a sizable pay reduction.

Chris Cooley is listed as the Redskins' starting fullback for Saturday's preseason game. With Darrel Young (hamstring) sidelined, the Redskins are using Cooley as an H-back for Evan Royster and Alfred Morris. Cooley will have to be an effective zone-run blocker to keep his spot on the 53-man roster. Young will immediately regain his starting job when healthy.
