Coach Tom Coughlin confirmed that Brandon Jacobs was his goal-line back and Da'Rel Scott was his third-down back in Sunday's loss to the Broncos.
The Giants tried to solve their running back woes with a sluggish 31-year-old they signed off the street and a borderline NFL player. Predictably, it didn't work. Jacobs managed just four yards on seven carries and Scott had two yards on five carries. If the Giants want to spark their running game, they'll have to give David Wilson another shot at significant touches.

Brandon Jacobs weighed in at 265 after signing with the Giants on Tuesday.
That's about right for Jacobs. However, the 31-year-old says he tipped the scales at 290 this summer. Jacobs admitted he's not in football shape at the moment. It could take a couple weeks of practice for him to get there. We really don't expect Jacobs to see many touches this season. He's pure insurance.

The Giants reportedly believe newly signed Brandon Jacobs can "possibly spell" David Wilson "on passing downs and maybe at the goal line."
Note that the veteran running back cattle call the Giants held Tuesday was scheduled before Wilson's nightmarish 2013 debut. Jacobs was brought back to help fill the gap left by Andre Brown (leg) -- not to take Wilson's starting job. A source tells ESPN New York that one of the reasons Jacobs was signed was because of his familiarity with their protection schemes, an area Wilson has struggled in. The two-time Super Bowl champ is also expected to help "mentor" Wilson in other areas. Per ESPN's Dan Graziano, "the odds are that [Jacobs] won't be getting too many touches right away, if ever."

Giants signed RB Brandon Jacobs.
The news will have David Wilson owners shaking in their boots, but the simple truth is, Jacobs is lucky to be back on an NFL roster. Jacobs looked done in San Francisco last season, is on the wrong side of 30 and averaged just 3.8 yards per carry in 2011. He's being added to provide a stabilizing presence more than anything else. Provided he's active for Sunday's game against the Broncos, he should be No. 3 on the depth chart behind Wilson and Da'Rel Scott. It's hard to see Jacobs coming into fantasy value.

The New York Daily News reports the Giants are "very unlikely" to re-sign free agent Brandon Jacobs.
It's a logical connection because Jacobs has played for the Giants in the past, but illogical from the standpoint that he's never been a third-down back type. The Giants are searching for help in pass protection after losing Andre Brown to a left-leg fracture. Tim Hightower would make a lot more sense.

Running backs coach Jerald Ingram said free agent RB Brandon Jacobs is "hoping and praying and dying" to re-sign with the Giants.
Ingram indicated that the Giants have at least thought about bringing back Jacobs, who spent the first seven years of his career with the organization. But he'd only return as a strict backup to Andre Brown, a role Jacobs whined about in San Francisco last season. The Giants don't need the distraction.

49ers released RB Brandon Jacobs.
Just in time for him not to be able to sign with anybody for the stretch run. Jacobs was suspended, essentially for insubordination, for the final three weeks of the season. Technically, Jacobs can sign with playoff teams, but he won't generate any interest. The 30-year-old eight-year veteran couldn't get on the field for the 49ers this season, and rushed just five times for seven yards when he did. Jacobs is near, if not at, the end.
