Monroe is starting while Joel Embiid (knee) is held out for the game. After sitting out Game 1 and playing just nine minutes in Game 2, Monroe is likely in for a significant minutes increase Thursday before returning to his bench role when Embiid is again able to play.

Monroe scored a team-high 18 (6-8 FG, 6-6 FT) while adding five rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes off the bench in Tuesday's 122-99 loss to the Heat.

With the Sixers already locked into the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, the team rested Joel Embiid and J.J. Redick completely and capped the minutes for their other key starters, leaving plenty of touches for depth players like Monroe. The veteran big man might see a similar workload in Philly's regular-season finale, but don't expect him to make any kind of impact in the playoffs.

The Celtics confirmed Wednesday that they would let Monroe walk following the end of his 10-day deal, and the Sixers will now swoop in and add the veteran big man as the playoffs approach. In order to accommodate the 28-year-old, Philadelphia will waive Justin Patton, who was acquired earlier in the season as part of the Jimmy Butler deal.

Monroe's 10-day contract with the Celtics expired Wednesday, and the team will not retain him, Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald reports.

Monroe appeared in only two games for Boston, which initially signed him when it appeared Al Horford could be in danger of missing more time with a nagging knee issue. Now, with Horford, Aron Baynes and Daniel Theis all healthy as the playoffs approach, Boston has little need for a fourth center.

Monroe was signed to a 10-day contract by the Celtics ahead of Saturday's game with Charlotte, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

The veteran center is a good bet to see significant minutes against the Hornets as the Celtics will be without Al Horford (knee) and Aron Baynes (ankle). Monroe had zero points (0-3 FG), two rebounds, and two assists in 11 minutes during Saturday's 119-90 win over the Grizzlies.

Monroe has gone scoreless twice across the last eight contests, and four times over the last 12. Even with Jonas Valanciunas (thumb) sidelined through the beginning of February, Monroe hasn't been able to establish himself as anything more than a decent low-end option for deep leagues.
