O'Neil was named Double-A Player of the Year by Baseball America on Monday, the Seattle Times reports.

O'Neil, the organization's top prospect, hit .293 with 24 homers, 102 RBI and 12 steals to lead Jackson to the Southern League Championship Series that started Monday. He's had multiple hits in four of five playoff games this postseason, going 9-for-20 with three homers. O'Neill's power has never been in question, but he made strides with his hit tool this season, cutting his strikeout rate to 26.1 percent and improving his walk rate to 10.8 percent to raise his OBP from .316 in 2015 to .374 this year. If he continues to improve that part of his game next season at Triple-A, he could see time in Seattle in 2017. He's scheduled to play in the Arizona Fall League, as well.

O'Neill, 21, leads the Southern League in batting with a .302 average. He is also second in the league in home runs with 20.

EDGE Analysis

O'Neill shrugged off a recent elbow injury and trails only Daniel Palka in home runs. Despite little fanfare, O'Neill continues to rake. He is slashing .302/.385/.529 with 20 home runs and 84 RBI in 106 games for Double-A Jackson. He deserves much more notoriety than he is receiving.

O'Neill has always demonstrated the power stroke, but there were questions as to whether he could hit for average as well. Despite batting just .211 over his last 10 contests, O'Neill is still hitting above .300 as the Futures Game approaches. He has also been drawing more walks and striking out less, a nod to improved plate discipline. With power to boot, there's an argument to be made that O'Neill is the top prospect for the Mariners at this time.

O'Neill has been particularly scorching of late, batting .432 with two home runs and 14 RBI in his last 10 contests.

O'Neill, 20, is batting .238/.275/.473 with 16 home runs, 45 RBI and 10 steals through 65 games for High-A Bakersfield. Plate discipline remains a concern for O'Neill, who has fanned 87 times while drawing just 11 walks this season.
