Even though he picked up the loss, this was one of Matzek's better outings on the year. He now has just six quality outings in his 14 starts in the big leagues. Matzek still has trouble with his control and sports a mediocre 53:30 K:BB ratio in 77 innings pitched. His next start is scheduled for Monday on the road against the Giants.

Matzek (2-7) allowed three runs on four hits over five innings as he took the loss, while giving up five walks on Friday against the Diamondbacks.
The Rockies young rookie struggled most of the night with his control, although things could've been much worse if not for being bailed out after walking the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Matzek has really had some hard times on the road this season where he is now 0-4, with a 6.00-plus ERA.

Tyler Matzek hurled seven innings of shutout ball Saturday to help the Rockies rout the Pirates.
Matzek was backed by an active Colorado offense and simply cruised, allowing only three hits and two walks. He struck out three. The 23-year-old left-hander is now 2-4 with a 4.28 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 54 2/3 innings this season. He has the talent to put together a nice string of outings, but consistency has been an issue in 2014 for Matzek and the entire Rockies pitching staff.

Matzek hasn't embarrassed himself since his callup, but there's no way he can give up five runs and win with the way the Rockies are hitting now. He's 1-3 with a 4.79 ERA and a 22/11 K/BB ratio in 35 2/3 innings over six starts.
