Tyler Matzek allowed one run over six innings in his start against the Brewers on Friday. The Brewers won 3-2, but Matzek did not factor into the decision. Matzek dueled with Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse in what was a low-scoring affair. He struck out three over six innings, scattered five hits and walked one. The lone run to cross the plate against Matzek came on a sixth inning Jonathan Lucroy single. This was just Matzek's fourth start of the season. He bounced back nicely from his last start, in which he gave up five runs to (them again) the Brewers.

Tyler Matzek allowed five runs over 5 1/3 innings in Sunday's loss to the Brewers. Matzek has gotten progressively worse in his three starts, with Sunday being the worst of the bunch. He gave up seven hits, including an Aramis Ramirez two-run homer, and walked four more on the afternoon. He owns a 5.19 ERA and 1.62 WHIP through 17 1/3 innings, and he'll get his shot at redemption when the two clubs meet again on Friday.

Tyler Matzek allowed three runs on 10 hits over five innings Monday, taking the loss against the Dodgers. Matzek impressed in his MLB debut Wednesday -- limiting the Braves to two runs over seven-plus innings -- but Los Angeles ensured his first game against a division rival didn't go as smoothly. The rookie 23-year-old left-hander was pitching about an hour away from his hometown of Mission Viejo, and it's possible nerves were an issue. Despite possessing good stuff, the 11th overall pick in the 2009 draft failed to strike out a batter tonight. Matzek has a Sunday matinee scheduled against the Brewers on Blake Street.

Tyler Matzek held the Braves to two runs over seven-plus innings Wednesday, earning a win in his MLB debut. It was an impressive outing from the 23-year-old left-hander, who hadn't exactly been lighting it up this season at the Triple-A level. He struck out seven Atlanta batters and did not issue a walk, carrying a shutout into the eighth inning. Matzek was once considered a top pitching prospect and wouldn't be the first pitcher to suddenly blossom in the majors. But we still consider him a risky fantasy play going forward.

Rockies recalled LHP Tyler Matzek from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Matzek is scheduled to make his major league debut on Wednesday night against the Braves. The 23-year-old hasn't posted great numbers this season at the Triple-A level and is not a good fantasy bet versus Atlanta. He was the 11th overall pick in the 2009 draft.

The Rockies will call up left-hander Tyler Matzek to start Wednesday against the Braves. It will be his major league debut. The move is mostly out of necessity, as Jordan Lyles (hand) and Eddie Butler (shoulder) have both hit the disabled list over the past few days. Matzek, 23, has a 4.05 ERA and 61/31 K/BB ratio in 66 2/3 innings over 12 starts in Triple-A this season. He has impressed his control somewhat, but he's a risky play in fantasy leagues.

Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports that it will be either Tyler Matzek or Franklin Morales taking Eddie Butler's (shoulder) spot in the rotation Wednesday. It was Morales who was booted from the rotation last week when Butler arrived, but the Rockies seem more likely to give Matzek a shot. The former first-round pick has put up a 4.05 ERA while striking out 61 in 66 2/3 innings at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season. A start at Coors against the Braves would certainly be a stiff first test.

Rockies right-handed pitching prospect Tyler Matzek struck out nine batters in six innings for Triple-A Colorado Springs. Matzek's well-documented command struggles contribute to his inconsistent results despite electric stuff. Colorado Springs is one of the best hitting environments in the major leagues, and opposing batters are hitting .265/.340/.413 against him for the season. However, he has 61 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings, and his walk rate has dropped to 4.2 BB/9, which is the lowest level of his professional career.

The Rockies could promote pitching prospect Tyler Matzek to replace Franklin Morales in the rotation. Morales holds a 6.03 ERA over 62 2/3 innings this season and is probably bound for the bullpen shortly. Matzek, the 11th overall pick in the 2011 draft, holds a 3.20 ERA with 50 strikeouts over 56 1/3 innings at Triple-a Colorado Springs. He's still walking too many (25), but the lefty probably deserves a shot at this point.

Rockies left-handed pitching prospect Tyler Matzek struck out 11 and allowed two hits, two walks, and one run in his Triple-A debut. Matzek struck out seven in six innings during spring training, while keeping his walks down. Matzek's struggles have been well documented, including spending two weeks with his high school coach in 2011 after struggling with his command and pitch velocity. He had a good year in Double-A last year, though his strikeout rate dropped precipitously. Keep an eye on him, as he could be called up to be the lefty who splits up Gray and Butler for the next few years.
