Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Steven Souza was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a broken left hand, according to 620 WDAE AM. Souza exited Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox with what was believed to be a hand contusion, but an X-ray revealed a fracture. The injury could sideline Souza for the remainder of the season, which would leave a combination of Grady Sizemore, Brandon Guyer and Joey Butler to fill the void in right field. Souza was recently activated from the disabled list after recovering from a hand injury, and it is unclear if the recent issue complicated the previous one. He is hitting just .212 this season but has hit 15 home runs and stolen 10 bases in 88 games, his first year in the majors playing more than 21, which he did last season with the Washington Nationals.

Souza (hand) took swings off a tee Saturday and will likely take batting practice Sunday, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Souza's Friday meeting with a hand specialist went well, and he's already ramping up his activity level. The Rays hope to have him back shortly after the All-Star break, though he won't be eligible to return until July 21.

Souza (hand) had a positive meeting with a hand specialist and will take dry swings Friday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports. Continued difficulty with his hand caused Souza to meet with a specialist Friday, but the meeting netted positive results as he will be able to take dry swings. Reportedly, the Rays' plan is to have Souza ramp up baseball activities on Thursday with the intention of having him return to the team shortly after the break.

Souza (finger) will see a hand specialist Friday, as he still doesn't have feeling in his bruised and lacerated right pinky finger, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Souza doesn't seem to be progressing as expected, yet the Rays still hope he'll be ready to return from the disabled list when first eligible July 21. The time off might do him some good, given how poorly he'd been hitting over the past few weeks.

Souza (finger) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports. Although Souza's injury isn't believed to be overly serious, the Rays will let him rest until after the All-Star break, with the DL stint ruling him out until at least July 21. He homered against the Yankees on Sunday, but Souza has otherwise struggled badly at the plate since the end of May, tallying 19 hits (.171 batting average) and 40 strikeouts in 111 at-bats. His absence will leave more playing time for Brandon Guyer and Grady Sizemore.

Souza (hand) has no damage to the tendon in his right pinky and should avoid a disabled list stint, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports. Mooney later reported that Souza said he is available to pinch-run or play defense Monday night, but has not swung a bat yet. He's been running cold at the plate of late, hitting for a .210/.301/.417 slash line this season. Brandon Guyer will man right field until Souza's pinky heals.

Souza (hand) will visit a specialist Monday and appears unlikely to play in the series opener against the Royals, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports. X-rays came back negative on Souza's hand after he was struck by a pitch in Sunday's game, but he did suffer a deep laceration on his pinkie finger. The wound required stitches, and while the meeting with the specialist isn't expected to turn up anything further, it wouldn't be surprising if Souza sat out a couple of games before the All-Star break.

Souza is nursing a sore hand after he was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning of Sunday's win over the Yankees, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports. Souza was able to remain in the game and take his base after being hit, but was pulled later in the game for Joey Butler. X-rays conducted on Souza's hand following his removal came back negative, but the soreness might be problematic enough to knock him out of the lineup Monday against the Royals.

Souza went 2-for-4 Saturday with a ninth-inning, two-run home run off Dellin Betances. The blast was his 15th of the season and nearly made Souza the hero, although Brad Boxberger promptly lost the game for the Rays in the bottom of the ninth. Souza also struck out twice though, and while his power and speed make him useful, he'll remain a batting average liability unless he finds a way to control the strike zone better.
