Detroit is close to finalizing a deal that would send Justin Wilson and Alex Avila to the Chicago Cubs, leaving Greene among the top options for saves in Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
It's not clear who will take over as closer for Detroit after the trade is completed, but Greene appears to be the leading candidate along with Bruce Rondon and Daniel Stumpf.

Greene has 44 strikeouts in 41.0 innings pitched as one of Detroit's top relievers this season.
EDGE Analysis
Working as the primary set-up man for closer Justin Wilson, Greene is striking out 25.3 percent of batters he faces and has issued only 23 free passes. With Wilson being the subject of trade rumors heading towards the deadline, Greene may only be a couple weeks away from taking over as the primary closer for the second half of the season.

Greene has a 1.57 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 28.2 innings this season.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander has become one of the Tigers' most reliable bullpen arms and has recorded nine holds thus far. Opponents are slashing only .184/.280/.243 against the 28-year-old this season, and he has a solid K/9 of 10.4. Greene is in the midst of a breakout year and could see even more opportunities if he continues his dominant season.

Greene recorded his fifth hold of the season in Thursday's win over the Orioles. He pitched 1.2 innings without allowing a hit or run, while striking out two.
EDGE Analysis
Greene is quietly putting together a very solid season so far, as he's got a 1.40 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 21 strikeouts through 19.1 innings. Greene flamed out as a starter, posting a 6.88 ERA in 2015 when he started in 16 of his 18 games. Last year, Greene came on in relief in 47 of his 50 games, but his ERA only came down to 5.82, despite a 3.13 FIP. It remains to be seen whether he can keep up his current pace, but he has the stuff to be an effective middle reliever the rest of the way.

Greene has pitched 5.1 innings of one-run ball to start the season.
EDGE Analysis
That lone run came in Greene's first appearance of the season. Since April 4, he has recorded three holds, struck out six, and walked four. Greene's 1.69 ERA, compared to his 4.02 FIP, is something to keep an eye on regarding the 28-year-old going forward. The right-hander endured a tough 2016, allowing 39 runs over 60.1 innings between a bullpen role and three starts.

Greene said his struggles this spring are a result of working on his mechanics, not lingering finger numbness he's been dealing with, MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Blood circulation issues led to surgery two years ago for Greene, and the fingers on his right hand will still occasionally go cold or numb. However, he said he's gotten used to the feeling, and his struggles this spring are more due to mechanics. "I think what was happening was, for me, when I tell myself to stay back, I slow my arm down," Greene said. "All spring training I've been trying to get my arm to catch up. I finally stopped thinking about it, and it caught up, and everything felt great." The righty gave up seven runs on 11 hits over his first four innings this spring, but he's pitched five straight scoreless innings since. Greene has the stuff to be an effective reliever, but he did post a 5.82 ERA last season despite a 3.13 FIP.

Greene, who will remain in the bullpen for the 2017 season, said that he will always have to deal with blisters because of poor circulation, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
In terms of talent, Greene has the potential to be one of the Tigers' best relievers. His move to the bullpen last year included 59 strikeouts in 60.1 innings, but he scuffled at times and posted a 5.82 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. Nevertheless, it would hardly be surprising to see him emerge as one of the team's preferred setup option in front of Francisco Rodriguez if he takes a step forward in Year 2 as a reliever.

Greene appeared in long relief Sunday, allowing three hits and two earned runs in 1.0 innings of work. He did not strike out a batter.
EDGE Analysis
Sunday was a tough day for the Detroit bullpen as they had to start sending men to the mound in the first inning after the wheels fell off Matt Boyd's bus right from the outset. Greene's line looks ugly, but there is some light under the dark cloud of his 5.55 ERA. His 3.18 FIP suggests his season was impaired by bad luck and bad defense, so there may be value in his arm in 2017, depending on the role he earns.

Greene has allowed 14 runs on 17 hits in his last 9.1 innings of work (since August 17). His ERA for that period is 13.50.
EDGE Analysis
Greene began the year as a starter before morphing into a late-inning role. He has pitched almost exclusively in the seventh or eighth innings this summer, but he just isn't locating the ball well. Greene and Justin Wilson combined for an especially awful eighth inning on Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits in a 7-4 loss to the White Sox. His manager still has faith in him in a late-inning role, but it's hard to use him for fantasy purposes until he starts getting the ball where he wants it.

Greene (2-3) was stuck with the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in the top of the ninth Wednesday against the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
Greene came on in the eighth after fellow reliever Justin Wilson gave up a game-tying homer and a triple, and he stranded the man on third. However, coming back out for the ninth didn't work out, as he ended up having one of his worst outings as a reliever. There's not much fantasy value here outside of very deep formats that count holds.
