Newcomb could be recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Thursday's game against the Reds, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

The Braves can get away without adding another pitcher to the rotation this week, but it appears they may want to build in an additional day of rest for Mike Foltynewicz (elbow), who is expected to return from the 10-day injured list this weekend against the Rockies after recently completing his fourth rehab start. If Atlanta does in fact save Foltynewicz for the weekend, Newcomb would be eligible to return from the minors Thursday and would make for the most logical choice to fill the opening in the pitching schedule. The Braves may use the last two games of their series in Cincinnati as a de facto audition for the final spot in their rotation between Newcomb and Mike Soroka, who is scheduled to start Wednesday.

Newcomb allowed four runs over 1.1 innings during Saturday's start against the Mets and apparently gave the Braves all they needed to see with Mike Foltynewicz (elbow) nearing his return from the injured list. Newcomb allowed only two runs over 11 innings during his first two starts, but his 5:6 K:BB tells a more troubling story. Touki Toussaint threw six innings of stellar relief Saturday and figures to be in the mix for the starting rotation with Newcomb now in the minors, though the Braves have yet to announce their plans for the rotation.

Newcomb didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 11-7 win over the Mets, surrendering four runs on five hits and two walks over 1.1 innings.

EDGE Analysis

Atlanta handed the southpaw a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Newcomb immediately squandered it and got chased from the game after only 35 pitches (21 strikes). Touki Toussaint pitched very well in relief of Newcomb and Mike Foltynewicz (elbow) is close to rejoining the rotation as well, so Newcomb -- who now sports a 4.38 ERA and awful 5:8 K:BB through 12.1 innings -- could have a lot riding on his next start, current;y set for Thursday at home against Arizona.

EDGE Analysis

The 25-year-old shut out the Cubs but didn't make it through five innings to record the victory in his first start, and then Sunday, the Braves didn't give him enough runs. Newcomb left with the game tied 2-2. He may still be looking for his first win, but Newcomb owns a 1.64 ERA through two starts. He also has a 1.45 WHIP and five strikeouts in 11.0 innings. His next outing is expected to be against the Mets.

Newcomb walked four and allowed six hits in four scoreless innings during Monday's win over the Cubs. He walked three and took the no-decision.

EDGE Analysis

Newcomb needed a whopping 91 pitches to get through four-plus innings and only 49 were strikes. He was in line to pick up a win but didn't finish the fifth inning. The third-year southpaw walked 15 batters in 21 innings this spring and his strike zone command remains an issue. He'll take on Miami on Sunday.

The Braves have given no hint that Newcomb's rotation spot is in jeopardy, but his 9:15 K:BB through 17 innings is a red flag that something may be amiss with the southpaw -- by contrast, he has a 15:5 K:BB last spring in 15.1 frames. After putting together a 3.90 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 2018 despite an 11.6 percent walk rate, any further degradation in his control could have a disastrous effect on his fantasy value.

If there's a silver lining, it's that he has yet to allow a homer, but the free passes are a major red flag for a pitcher who's posted a walk rate of 12.0 percent through his first two MLB campaigns. Injuries to Mike Foltynewicz (elbow) and Mike Soroka (shoulder) all but ensure that Newcomb will break camp in the Braves' rotation, but if he can't find the strike zone more consistently, he could lose his spot once the rest of the staff gets healthier.

Newcomb will start Game 3 of the NLDS on Sunday against the Dodgers.

EDGE Analysis

As reported earlier, the Braves will start with Newcomb after previously planning to go with Kevin Gausman. Atlanta will be in an all hands on deck situation down 2-0 in the series, so it's possible that the lefty Newcomb will get just one turn through the order before the Braves bring in a righty, possibly Gausman.
