Manager Andy Green said that he is considering moving Yangervis Solarte to second base and having Schimpf (oblique) and Cory Spangenberg (toe) move their position battle to third, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Even though Schimpf has primarily been a second baseman during his professional career, he actually played better defense at third base last season (no errors in 108.2 innings at third compared to five errors in 580.2 innings at the keystone). Even if Green decides to pull the trigger on the position change, Schimpf's value won't change much considering he should still have second base eligibility after playing 67 games there last season. The true swing in fantasy value will be determined by which of the two candidates win the vacant starting job, whether it be at second or third. Both Schimpf and Spangenberg are dealing with minor injuries and are expected to return early next week.

Schimpf (oblique) is targeting a return to game action on Monday, Jeff Sanders of the Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
According to Sanders, the Padres will put Schimpf through full workouts Saturday and Sunday to continue his rehab from an oblique injury. Provided that Schimpf gets through the workouts without any issue, he should be in line to get back into the lineup as early as Monday. Cory Spangenberg and Carlos Asuaje will likely take over second base duties until Schimpf is ready to return.

Schimpf (oblique) is going through most of practice without issues and is expected to be available for spring action Thursday, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 28-year-old doesn't appear to be affected anymore by his recent oblique tightness, but the ultimate test today will be if he can suit up to continue his competition for keystone duties with Cory Spangenberg and, perhaps, Carlos Asuaje.

Schimpf (oblique) could be back to baseball activity after Wednesday's off day, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Oblique tightness led to him being scratched from Monday's exhibition game, but the hope is he can ramp up his recovery Thursday. Schimpf is the favorite to open the year as the starter at the keystone, but Cory Spangenberg lingers as legitimate competition, and Carlos Asuaje could also push for playing time as the season progresses.

Schimpf was scratched from Monday's game due to tightness in his left oblique.
EDGE Analysis
The injury doesn't appear to be too serious, but oblique injuries can linger, so Schimpf likely will need some time before he gets back in action. If he misses extended time, it could hurt his chances at earning the starting job at second base from Cory Spangenberg.

Schimpf will compete with Cory Spangenberg for the Padres' starting second base job this spring, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 28-year-old broke on to the scene last year and smacked 20 homers and 51 RBI in just 330 plate appearances. While his batting average was poor (.217), he showed an ability to get on base at a decent clip (.336). With the Padres starving for power, Schimpf would make a nice fit at the keystone. However, his age and lack of consistency in the minors brings up questions about whether or not he can repeat his power consistently at the major league level. If Schimpf wins the job, he would have the highest fantasy appeal considering the power potential from a shallow position.

Schimpf is absent from the starting lineup Thursday against the Dodgers.
EDGE Analysis
The lefty-hitting second baseman unsurprisingly will sit against southpaw Julio Urias -- and probably in part to help turn around his late-season slump (.173 batting average and .623 OPS in September). Expect him to return to the initial batting order Friday against Diamondbacks right-hander Braden Shipley. For Thursday, Carlos Asuaje slides into the keystone and will hit seventh.

Schimpf is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Dodgers.
EDGE Analysis
Schimpf received a bulk of the playing time at second base lately, but now that he's slumping a bit (3-for-20 in his last seven games), the infielder will head to the bench so the Padres can evaluate their other options on the infield. Carlos Asuaje will man the keystone in his place.

Schimpf is out of the lineup Saturday against the Giants.
EDGE Analysis
Carlos Asuaje will get the start at the keystone Saturday, and could continue to get a fair share of the starts over the season's final nine days as the Padres look to evaluate all of their young players on the active roster.

Schimpf is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Giants.
EDGE Analysis
He has started 25 of the last 28 games, hitting .236 with a horrible 38.2 percent K-rate over that stretch. However, he has maintained fantasy relevance, hitting seven homers with 18 RBI since Aug. 15. Adam Rosales will start at second base and hit seventh Wednesday.
