Red Sox activated OF Ryan Kalish from the 60-day disabled list. Once a top prospect, Kalish has been limited to just 93 games since the beginning of 2011 due to a variety of maladies. Kalish missed this past season due to a right shoulder injury and underwent cervical fusion surgery on his back in August. A change of scenery might do him well, but it of course wouldn't automatically turn Kalish into Mr. Durability.

"Obviously it's of some severity, and hopefully through the rehab, he gets back to the player that he was when he first came up." Kalish has been been out all season following right shoulder surgery, and now it will be a lost campaign for him entirely. It's not clear at this point if he'll be ready for spring training. Kalish underwent a right shoulder arthroscopy and posterior labrum repair at the end of January. While the 25-year-old outfielder said the shoulder "feels great" and is "coming along nicely," he's still likely a month or so away from game action.

Kalish was expected to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he'll now be out for the early part of the season. Ian Browne of MLB.com reports that Ryan Kalish surgery on his right shoulder performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum next week. Kalish was expected to compete for a spot on the Red Sox Opening Day roster, but will now be sidelined for the beginning of the season. It's another tough break for a once very promising prospect, who hasn't been able to stay on the field. The Sox signed Ryan Sweeney to a minor league deal on Friday to provide additional depth in the outfield.
