Ryan Kalish (shoulder) is currently working out, but won't be able to hit or throw for about a month. Kalish is currently working his way back from surgery in November to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The 23-year-old outfielder could still make an impact with the big club at some point this year, but he's not expected back until around June.

Ryan Kalish told the Boston Globe on Thursday that he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder in November and does not expect to be ready for spring training or the start of the season. Kalish was limited to just 24 games this past season after injuring the shoulder while diving for a ball in April. He returned in August, but only played eight games before being shut down with a bulging disk in his neck which also required surgery. Many thought the 23-year-old would compete for a spot on Boston's Opening Day roster, but he's not expected to be ready to contribute until sometime in May or June. Now that Josh Reddick is with Oakland, the current in-house options for right field include Ryan Sweeney, Darnell McDonald and Mike Aviles. Look for the Red Sox to sign a free agent between now and spring training.

Ryan Kalish is feeling no pain four weeks removed from surgery to repair a bulging disc in his neck. "At this point honestly, I can't really tell that anything was done to my neck," said Kalish. "You have post-surgery pain and all that, but that's totally gone. It just feels like a normal neck. My range of motion feels good and I'm not experiencing any pain. I'm actually rehabbing my shoulder too; everything is connected. I'm just making sure everything as strong and flexible to prevent anything further down the line." Kalish should be 100 percent by spring training and will compete for a bench spot.

Red Sox recalled outfielder Ryan Kalish from Triple-A Pawtucket and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a bulging disc in his neck. It was a procedural move that allowed Boston to open a spot on the 40-man roster for J.D. Drew, who was activated from the DL Sunday. Kalish is done for the year after he underwent surgery earlier this month to repair a bulging disc in his neck. This was a nightmare season for the 23-year-old outfielder, who also missed 3 1/2 months while rehabbing from a partially torn labrum in his shoulder. He'll hope for better luck in 2012 and should be ready in time for spring training.

Ryan Kalish underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a bulging disc in his neck. Kalish was originally scheduled to undergo surgery last week, but the procedure was delayed in order for him to gather information from other doctors. The 23-year-old outfielder is expected to rest for 10 days before beginning a 6-8 week rehabilitation process. Barring any setbacks, he should be ready in time for spring training.

Red Sox prospect outfielder Ryan Kalish did not undergo neck surgery last Thursday, as previously scheduled. Kalish is currently bothered by a bulging disk which is causing nerve issues. Surgery seems like a foregone conclusion, but the 23-year-old outfielder is seeing different doctors to gather as much information as possible. Once Kalish has surgery, it is expected he will be ready for spring training.

Red Sox prospect outfielder Ryan Kalish will undergo season-ending surgery Thursday to repair a bulging disc in his neck. Kalish was placed on the minor league disabled list last week after feeling renewed soreness in his upper trapezius/neck region. This has been a nightmare season for the 23-year-old outfielder, who also missed 3 1/2 months while rehabbing from a partially torn labrum in his shoulder. He'll hope for better luck in 2012.

Ryan Kalish has been placed on the minor league disabled list with inflammation in his right trapezius muscle. A tough break for the young outfielder, as he just returned earlier this month following a 3 1/2 month absence for a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder. It's possible this latest ailment will hurt his chances of being recalled in September when rosters expand.

Ryan Kalish will play in a game Thursday for the first time since injuring his right shoulder in April. Kalish suffered a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder while diving for a ball with Triple-A Pawtucket on April 21. He will serve as the designated hitter Thursday with Single-A Lowell and could play in the outfield this weekend. If all goes well, the 23-year-old could be back with Triple-A Pawtucket before long.

Ryan Kalish (shoulder) will take batting practice Wednesday to determine how close he is to playing in games. Kalish has been playing in extended spring training but could be ready to rejoin Triple-A Pawtucket. He has a partially torn labrum in his shoulder but is attempting to play through the ailment.
