Maholm struck out five and walked none, but was done in by surrendering three home runs. The non-quality outing was his second straight, and leaves him with a 4.73 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 27/12 K/BB ratio through 45 2/3 innings. Off the radar in mixed leagues, he'll get the light-hitting Pirates in Pittsburgh next weekend.

Paul Maholm will stay in Arizona to make a minor league start before joining the Cubs rotation on April 10.
Maholm has been terrific this spring and will likely be the team's third-best starter this season, but he ended last season with a shoulder injury and dealt with the flu in March, so he'll be fifth out of the gate. He should have some NL-only value this year.

Paul Maholm scattered four hits and two walks across five scoreless innings of work in Monday's 2-0 win over the Padres.
Maholm's strong spring rolls on, as he's now the owner of a 0.90 ERA and 10/4 K/BB ratio through 10 innings of work. He has an exceptionally low ceiling, but is worth a roster spot in NL-only leagues.

Paul Maholm has had no issues with his pitching shoulder this spring.
Maholm missed the final six weeks of the 2011 season because of a strained shoulder, but he's felt totally healthy this spring other than a bout with the flu. ''I did what I was supposed to do in the offseason. I rested, rehabbed,'' he said. ''Ever since I started throwing, it's felt great. It feels normal. The strain wasn't a serious thing. My shoulder feels a little bit stronger. I'm still not going to blow up the radar gun, but to me it feels good.'' Maholm will be the Cubs' No. 3 starter this season.

Paul Maholm (flu) threw a bullpen session Wednesday.
He's expected to throw another bullpen session Friday before finally making his Cactus League debut. The 29-year-old southpaw was a bit limited early in camp due to flu-like symptoms, but he still has plenty of time to get ready for the season. Maholm signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with Chicago in January after posting a 3.66 ERA and 97/50 K/BB ratio over 162 1/3 innings last season with Pittsburgh.

Paul Maholm is day-to-day with the flu.
Keeping him away from camp until the he's no longer contagious is smart thinking. Maholm should be back in the next few days. The Cubs signed Maholm to a one-year, $4.25 million contract with a $6.5 million option for 2013 in January. The 29-year-old left-hander posted a 3.66 ERA and 97/50 K/BB ratio over 162 1/3 innings with the Pirates last season before being shut down in August with a shoulder strain.

Cubs signed LHP Paul Maholm to a one-year, $4.25 million contract with a $6.5 million option for 2013.
That 2013 club option carries a $500,000 buyout, so Maholm is essentially guaranteed $5 million. It's not a terrible price for the 29-year-old left-hander, who registered a 3.66 ERA in 29 starts last season for Pittsburgh. He should help anchor a Cubs pitching staff that is veering young. Look for the Matt Garza trade talks to heat up.
