Sandoval will start for Mexico in Monday's WBC semifinal game against Japan, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Sandoval will get a big spring test against a loaded Japanese lineup that will include Angels teammate Shohei Ohtani. This will be Sandoval's second start in the WBC -- in his first outing, he allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out two batters in three innings against Team USA, who Mexico will face in the final if able to advance. The southpaw also got into two Cactus League games with the Angels prior to the WBC, allowing one run on three hits and posting a 6:0 K:BB over five frames.

Sandoval and the Angels agreed on a one-year, $2.75 million contract Friday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Sandoval and the Angels will avoid the arbitration process after striking a deal Friday. The 26-year-old started 27 games with Los Angeles in 2022, compiling a 2.91 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with 151 strikeouts over 148.2 innings.

Sandoval allowed five hits and one walk with six strikeouts over six scoreless innings in Monday's extra-inning loss versus the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision.

EDGE Analysis

After failing to record a quality start in any of his previous four starts entering Monday, Sandoval turned in one of the better starts of the season. He allowed one or fewer walks for just the seventh time. He finishes the 2022 campaign with a 2.91 ERA in 148.2 innings.

Sandoval did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against Oakland. He struck out four.

EDGE Analysis

Sandoval was mostly effective Tuesday but had trouble in the second inning, needing 29 pitches to finish the inning and allowing all three runs he would surrender on the night to score. He may have been able to record the quality start but was pulled with 94 pitches in favor of a R/R matchup after recording a strikeout to begin the sixth inning. The southpaw has now failed to record a quality start in each of his last four outings after recording three straight prior. He still owns a strong 3.09 ERA on the season and tentatively next faces Oakland again next week.

Sandoval (6-9) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out seven over five innings, earning the win Tuesday over the Rangers.

EDGE Analysis

Sandoval has been fairly effective lately, as this was his ninth straight start of two or fewer earned runs. The four walks matched his season high, a mark he's reached five times in 25 starts this year. The southpaw is now at a 3.01 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 141:57 K:BB through 137.1 innings. Sandoval is tentatively projected for a favorable home start versus the Athletics next week.

Sandoval allowed two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out three across 5.1 innings Wednesday against the Guardians. He did not factor into the decision.

EDGE Analysis

Sandoval induced nine groundball outs and needed only 81 pitches to record his 16 outs. However, he still got the early hook after allowing five hits across his last 1.1 innings. Nevertheless, Sandoval has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight consecutive starts, during which he's maintained a 1.86 ERA with a 43:14 K:BB across 48.1 frames. For the season, Sandoval maintains a 2.99 ERA with a 134: K:BB in 132.1 innings.

Sandoval allowed one run on six hits and one walk over five innings but did not factor in the decision against Detroit on Wednesday. He struck out four batters.

EDGE Analysis

Sandoval was solid in the outing, giving up only one run on a Spencer Torkelson homer. The lefty hurler did labor somewhat with 87 pitches over five innings, but he was in line for the win until the Tigers staged a ninth-inning comeback. Sandoval has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his past seven starts, posting a 1.67 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 40:14 K:BB across 43 innings during that stretch.

Sandoval (5-9) earned the win Wednesday over the Yankees. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings.

EDGE Analysis

Sandoval gave up both runs in the fifth inning, but Shohei Ohtani's three-run home run covered the damage in the sixth. This was Sandoval's third straight quality start, which comes after a stretch of five straight starts in which he didn't complete six frames. The southpaw now has a crisp 3.02 ERA on the year, though his 1.34 WHIP and 127:52 K:BB through 122 innings remain somewhat concerning. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the Tigers next week.

Sandoval (4-9) allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out five across six innings to take the loss Thursday against the Rays.

Sandoval allowed all five runs in the third inning. Only one run was earned, but Sandoval allowed a triple and a home run in the frame so he was still hit hard. Though it comes with the caveat of Thursday's performance, Sandoval has been charged with two or fewer earned runs in five consecutive starts. That has helped him bring his ERA down to 3.05 on the season while also posting a 120:50 K:BB across 115 frames.

Sandoval (4-8) earned the win against Detroit on Friday, pitching a four-hit shutout while striking out nine and walking none.

EDGE Analysis

Sandoval was incredibly efficient and accurate in his complete game shutout Friday. He threw 73 of 97 pitches for strikes, limiting Detroit batters to four hits and no walks. The lefty had not completed six innings since July 9. Sandoval earned a quality start in the contest, his eighth of the year. He has earned a quality start in each game this season that he has gone six or more innings. The impressive outing lowered his ERA to 3.14.
