Corbin (2-1) yielded two runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings Monday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Athletics.

Corbin worked through four scoreless frames before running into trouble in the fifth inning. He gave up two extra-base hits in the inning and was removed from the game after Tyler Soderstrom's two-run double. Corbin generated a season-high 12 whiffs, including six with his slider. Through three starts, Corbin has a 3.77 ERA, but his 1.53 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB are bright red flags that he's still the same pitcher that was saddled with a 5.71 ERA over the prior four seasons with the Nationals. With Kumar Rocker beginning to come around, the Rangers could have a tough choice to make once Jack Leiter (finger) is ready to return from the IL.

Corbin (1-0) earned the victory against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 5.1 innings.

Corbin held the Angels scoreless until the sixth frame, when Los Angeles managed to push across one run on three hits against him. The lefty was lifted with the tying runs on base, but Texas' bullpen came to the rescue and didn't allow any more Angels to score for the remainder of the game. Fantasy managers who have avoided Corbin in recent seasons may have trouble remembering that he made two All-Star teams and finished fifth in NL Cy Young voting earlier in his career. At 35 years of age, Corbin likely isn't primed for a late-career rejuvenation, so there's probably no need to rush to the waiver wire unless the veteran hurler puts together a string of similarly effective starts.

Corbin didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Cubs, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks with no strikeouts in four innings.

EDGE Analysis

Corbin had a rough second inning in his Rangers debut, giving up a leadoff homer to Dansby Swanson and a two-run single to Seiya Suzuki. The veteran left-hander tossed three scoreless innings otherwise, and he was able to throw 74 pitches before his night came to an end. Corbin could have some deep-league streaming appeal at home against the Angels in his next scheduled start, which lines up for early next week.

The original plan was for Corbin to join the Rangers around April 11, but Jack Leiter's move to the injured list Friday with a blister issue has forced the team to work a bit ahead of schedule. Assuming he slides right into Leiter's place in the rotation, Corbin will make his season debut Tuesday against the Cubs.

Corbin signed a one-year deal with Texas on March 18, so rather than having him rush through his throwing progression, he will begin the year in the minors to continue building up at a more comfortable pace.
