Corbin's fastball velocity this spring is up over three mph compared to his final Grapefruit League start of 2020, Maria Torres of The Athletic reports.

It's a very encouraging sign for the veteran left-hander after he struggled last season to a 4.66 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and mediocre 20.3 strikeout rate, more than 10 points below the mark he posted in 2018. Corbin has also been learning a cutter from Max Scherzer and is trying to grow more comfortable with his changeup in an effort to broaden his repertoire, but the key pitch for the southpaw remains his slider, which generated a 51.4 percent whiff rate in 2019 but tumbled to 38.1 percent last year. Corbin's ability to bounce back will be a big factor in determining whether the Nats can take a run at the NL East title.

Corbin threw 20 of 33 pitches for strikes in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins while mixing in his changeup and a cutter he's developing, Pete Kerzel of MASN Sports reports.

The veteran southpaw rarely used his changeup last season, throwing it only 5.6 percent of the time, but the Nats would like to see the pitch become a regular part of his arsenal. "We definitely want him to try to use it and get comfortable throwing it," manager Dave Martinez said Saturday. "It is a good pitch for him. Obviously, we've run the numbers and he doesn't throw it enough. So hopefully, once he gets comfortable, he'll start throwing it." Corbin saw his fastball velocity drop last season and he generated fewer whiffs with his slider, leading to his worst statistical season since 2016, so while adding a new pitch or two could help, it's the effectiveness of his staples that will determine how he performs in 2021.

He saw a big velocity dip across the board, and that's especially concerning for a 31-year-old with a history of elbow trouble.

Corbin struck out seven but allowed seven runs on 14 hits in a 7-3 loss to the Marlins on Saturday.

Corbin (2-6) has given up at least five runs in two of his last previous starts. After throwing over 400 innings to the tune of a 3.20 ERA across the previous two seasons, he has regressed in 2020. In addition to a 4.76 ERA, Corbin resides in the bottom fourth of qualified starters for expected ERA. A silver lining is that Corbin has gone two straight starts without issuing a walk. He'll look to keep that streak alive against the Mets on Thursday.

Corbin (2-5) took the loss Saturday against the Braves despite giving up two runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and zero walks over seven innings.

The nine hits allowed tied a season high for the veteran lefty, but he was able to limit the damage by giving up zero walks or extra-base hits. Corbin has a 4.10 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 50:15 K:BB through 52.2 innings and is set to pitch against the Marlins next weekend.

Corbin (2-4) allowed five runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out six over 5.1 innings to take the loss Sunday against Atlanta.

EDGE Analysis

Corbin is going through a rough patch as he's been charged with losses in four of his last five starts. The southpaw began Sunday's contest by tossing three scoreless innings, but the Atlanta offense got to him over the next few innings prior to his removal. He allowed a season-high 13 baserunners Sunday and now carries a 4.34 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 45.2 innings this year. He'll get another shot to face Atlanta on Saturday at home.

Corbin (2-3) took the loss Tuesday in Philadelphia after giving up two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks over five innings.

EDGE Analysis

It certainly wasn't the left-hander's best outing, but he was going to have a difficult time avoiding the loss regardless with the offense providing zero run support. Corbin has a 3.79 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB through 40.1 innings and will look to get back in the win column Sunday in Atlanta.

Corbin allowed two runs on seven hits (one home run) and two walks while striking out three across six-plus innings Wednesday against the Phillies. He did not factor into the decision.

EDGE Analysis

Corbin served up a third-inning solo shot to Rhys Hoskins before running into some more trouble to begin the seventh after Didi Gregorius lined a triple that rolled to the left field wall. Corbin would not face another hitter but was charged with a second run after Gregorius was singled home by the very next batter. The 31-year-old southpaw has four quality starts in six outings but has been inconsistent with his ability to limit hits and record punchouts. He'll try to get into the win column in a rematch against the Phillies on Monday.

Corbin was quite effective over his first three starts of the season, but he's now been charged with back-to-back losses. He tallied a season-high nine strikeouts against the Marlins, but a second-inning rally by Miami put Corbin in line for the loss. The southpaw now carries a 3.99 ERA with 31 strikeouts over 29.1 innings this season. He'll attempt to return to the win column at home Wednesday against the Phillies.
