Conforto went 2-for-3 with a solo home run off left-hander Henry Owens in Friday's Grapefruit League opener against the Red Sox.

The 23-year-old will need a big spring to avoid beginning the regular season back at Triple-A, but launching a homer off a lefty is a great way to get the front office's attention. Conforto has hit just .129/.191/.145 in 62 big league at-bats against same-side pitching, so improvement in that area will be crucial not just for his 2017 fantasy value, but for his overall future career prospects.

Conforto will work on improving against left-handed pitchers this spring, as he attempts to win a spot on the 25-man roster, The New York Post reports. "He just needs at-bats against left-handed pitching, he knows he can hit them, he's hit them his whole life," hitting coach Kevin Long said Friday. "You have got to get the opportunity to do it, and when you do it, I don't think it's the end of the world if he has an 0-for-4 day against them, but it would be nice to be able to get him some at-bats against lefties and get him comfortable."

The 23-year-old has an uphill battle to break camp on the big league roster due to the Mets' overcrowded outfield picture, but the first order of business is to boost last season's miserable .104/.170/.125 line against lefties in 48 at-bats. It'll likely take a trade or injury to get Conforto on the Opening Day roster, but if he shows this spring that he can be an everyday player in the majors, he could force the Mets to get creative and find a way to give him regular playing time.

Conforto could begin the season at Triple-A Las Vegas if the Mets don't make a trade to clear up their outfield logjam, The NY Daily News reports. "I don't think we're going to piecemeal it [in the outfield] this year," Mets GM Sandy Alderson said Wednesday. "I don't want to forecast what's going to happen in spring training, but I don't see [Conforto] picking up at-bats at first base, picking up ABs here and there."

The team already has three expensive veterans in Yoenis Cespedes, Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce on the roster, while Juan Lagares is locked in as the primary defensive replacement, leaving little room for Conforto to get regular at-bats in the majors. Alderson's comments Wednesday suggested that the organization would prefer the 23-year-old get consistent playing time at Triple-A rather than sit on the bench in New York, so unless the GM is able to make a trade before Opening Day, think twice before investing heavily in him in re-draft formats.

Although he's typically an outfielder, Conforto said the Mets may have him add first base to his portfolio. Neither James Loney nor Lucas Duda stood out at first base for New York, as both finished the 2016 campaign with batting averages below .270. However, Conforto didn't excel at the plate either, as he ended the year with a .220/.310/.414 line.

Conforto is not in the lineup Monday against the Marlins.

Conforto garnered more playing time as of late due to the struggles of Jay Bruce, but Bruce will get the nod Monday for the second day in a row. That being said, Conforto has been hitting very well as of late, going 6-for-16 with three extra-base hits and seven RBI over his past eight games.

Conforto has been recalled from Triple-A and is in the lineup Thursday against the Marlins.
