Boyd is scheduled to start the Tigers' fourth game of the regular season on Monday at home against the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd was solid this spring, posting a 3.42 ERA and 26 strikeouts across 23.2 innings. However, Boyd also holds a career 5.47 ERA, so expectations should be tempered until he carries over the success into the regular season. The 27-year-old has some ability, but he's yet to put it together consistently at the MLB level. The rebuilding Tigers figure to give him plenty of chances to figure it out in 2018.

Boyd tossed three scoreless innings in Monday's Grapefruit League loss to the Nationals. He allowed one hit and two walks, while striking out three.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd had allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits over his last six innings, so it was nice to see him a bit sharper on Tuesday. The young lefty dropped his spring training ERA to 4.09 with the strong performance, and he's on track to secure a spot in Detroit's rotation to begin the season.

Boyd is working on his offspeed pitches during spring training and could use them more this season, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd's hard-hit rate on curveballs and sliders last year was 13.5 percent, which was second best among qualified starters. The lefty is taking that success to heart, as he plans to diversify his pitches more and challenge hitters less frequently with his fastball. He said his slider is "definitely becoming more of a weapon for me, and something that I'll probably use a little more in the course of a game if the game dictates it more, too. I feel comfortable with it." Boyd posted a 5.27 ERA and 1.56 WHIP last season, but he's in line to secure a spot in Detroit's rotation nonetheless.

Boyd will be used as one of Detroit's starting pitchers throughout spring training, and is on track to begin the season as a member of the starting rotation, Anthony French of the Detroit Free Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd is in good shape to make the starting rotation for the 2018 campaign, although Alex Wilson, Buck Farmer and Daniel Norris are also competing to earn a spot in the starting five. The 27-year old was announced as one of the starting pitchers to be used throughout spring training and tossed one inning while giving up two hits and a run Sunday against the Blue Jays. Boyd looks to start the year near the back end of the Tigers' rotation.

Boyd (6-11) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts over five innings and took the loss Friday against the Twins.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd will end his season with just one win in his final seven decisions, a struck in which he owns a 5.14 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. He gave up a pair of home runs in Friday's start, his last of the season, giving him 18 over 25 starts, a big reason why he was ineffective. Over three seasons, Boyd has yet to post an ERA below 4.50.

Boyd (6-10) allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings, but received no decision Saturday against the Twins.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd pitched well and left the game with a 3-2 lead, which the bullpen promptly blew, keeping him from picking up his seventh win of the season. He's had a strong September, as he's allowed just seven earned runs over five starts to lower his ERA by more than a full run. His next start has yet to be determined.

Boyd (6-10) tossed a one-hit shutout while earning the win Sunday against the White Sox, allowing one walk with five strikeouts.
EDGE Analysis
Boyd came within an eyelash of a no-hitter in this one, allowing a double to Tim Anderson with two outs in the ninth inning. He worked up to 121 pitches, but he was allowed to finish the game off and did so with no additional issues. This gem came as something of a surprise for Boyd, who hadn't delivered a quality start in his last nine outings. He owns a disappointing 5.33 ERA on the year, but that mark sits at 2.16 over his last four starts ahead of Friday's turn against the Twins.

Boyd (5-10) took the loss against Cleveland on Tuesday, giving up only one run on six hits and a walk over five innings while striking out five.
EDGE Analysis
Unfortunately for the left-hander, Corey Kluber was on the mound for the Tribe, and Francisco Liriano's leadoff shot in the first inning was all the offense Cleveland's ace would need in a 2-0 win. Boyd hasn't managed to produce a quality start in his last nine trips to the mound, posting a 6.58 ERA over that stretch, but he'll try to build on this performance in his next outing Sunday at home against the White Sox.

Boyd (5-9) gave up four runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over six-plus innings Wednesday, suffering a loss against the Royals. He struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
The 26-year-old lefty battled opposing starter Jason Hammel to a 2-2 tie through six, but Boyd came out for the seventh and promptly gave up a pair of doubles before being removed; the bullpen then allowed the game to turn into a 13-2 rout. A star in the minors, Boyd has yet to put it all together at the big-league level, as his 5.93 ERA clearly indicates. He should be deployed with great caution (if at all) down the stretch.

Fri 9/1/17 5:34 PM

Boyd gave up only one run on five hits and two walks over five innings while striking out five Friday, but he had to settle for a no-decision in a 3-2 loss to Cleveland.
EDGE Analysis
The lefty ran up his pitch count in what was otherwise a strong performance, throwing 61 of 98 pitches for strikes before exiting the game with the score knotted at 1-1. Boyd should remain in the Tigers rotation for the rest of the season with Justin Verlander in Houston and Michael Fulmer (elbow) shut down, but his 6.19 ERA in the second half doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.
