Giants president and CEO Larry Baer indicated that he doesn't anticipate a long-term extension with Matt Cain being completed by Opening Day.
"To be determined," Baer said. "All I will say is that if there are conversations, that's a good thing. We care about all of our players, and the homegrown players, obviously, carry some special qualities. There are guys now and going forward that we're going to be putting a lot of energy into, and (Cain is) one of them."

Liz Mullen of the Sports Business Journal reports that Matt Cain's agents, Landon Williams and Rick Landrum, have joined CAA Sports and remain in talks with the Giants about a long-term extension.
Williams and Landrum are now partnered with Buster Posey's agent Jeff Berry, who is assisting in negotiations with the Giants. Cain, who can become a free agent following the season, said earlier this month that he would like something resolved by the end of spring training.

Matt Cain said there remains ''plenty of mutual interest'' in signing a long-term extension with the Giants and that he would prefer to get his contract resolved by the end of spring training.
"We'd all like something resolved by the end of spring training," Cain said. "I don't think either side wants that to linger into the season.'' Cain, 26, is currently scheduled to make $15 million this year, but is eligible for free agency following the 2012 World Series.

Giants' vice president Bobby Evans said Wednesday that he has had "very healthy" and "ongoing" dialogue with the representatives for Matt Cain about a contract extension.
Cain is already under contract for $15 million in 2012, but he can become a free agent next offseason. "I'm an optimist by nature so you can pretty well gather we'll do everything we can with all parties to come to agreeable terms," said Evans. "They've been very responsive. "The Giants are also making an effort to lock up ace right-hander Tim Lincecum, though he remains under team control through 2013.

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Giants will attempt to lock up Matt Cain this offseason.
The San Francisco front office is also efforting a long-term extension with Tim Lincecum. Both pitchers are set to make significant salaries in 2012, so they may prefer to continue going year-to-year. But the comfort provided by a multi-year deal could be attractive. Cain, 26, posted a sparkling 2.88 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 33 starts this season. He can become a free agent in 2013.

Matt Cain will not start Wednesday's season finale against the Rockies.
The good news is that nothing is wrong with Cain, as they simply want to get another look at Eric Surkamp before the end of the season. The 26-year-old right-hander will finish the season at 12-11 with a 2.88 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 33 starts. He has logged at least 217 2/3 innings over each of the last four seasons.

Matt Cain won without his best stuff Sunday, giving up five runs - three earned - on five hits and four walks over five innings in a 12-5 romp over the Rockies.
His defense didn't help him out, but Cain simply wasn't sharp in this one in the thin Denver air. He did, though, manage to belt a two-run homer himself. It's the right-hander's shortest outing since April and just his fifth non-quality start in his last 18 tries. Still the owner of a 2.86 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, he'll face the D'Backs next weekend.

Matt Cain took a typically hard-luck loss on Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks in seven innings of San Francisco's 3-1 setback against the Padres at home.
Now 11-10, Cain has received just 27 runs of support in his 10 losses this season. He'll bring a 2.84 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 164/53 K/BB ratio into his Tuesday rematch with the Padres in San Diego.

Matt Cain pitched eight innings and allowed two runs Friday in the Giants' 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks.
One down, two to go for the Giants, who badly need a sweep in San Francisco this weekend if they're going to catch the Diamondbacks. They're now five games back in the NL West. Cain is still just 3-4 despite a 2.45 ERA in 10 starts since the All-Star break.

Matt Cain tossed eight innings of two-run ball but ended up with a no-decision against the Astros Sunday.
Cain's lack of run support continues to be crippling. He is 1-3 over his last six starts even though he has allowed a total of 13 earned runs over that span. All owners can do is keep trotting Cain's sparkling 2.87 ERA and 1.06 WHIP out there every start.
