Padres named Josh Byrnes as general manager.
Byrnes will succeed Jed Hoyer as the Padres general manager and the team will receive a player to be named later as compensation for Hoyer and Jason McLeod. The moves have been anticipated but weren't announced in deference to the World Series and an official press conference has not yet been scheduled. McLeod is known for the Red Sox drafts that produced the likes of Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz. His new title means farm director Oneri Fleita and scouting director Tim Wilken both report to him.

Mat Latos closed out 2011 on a strong note Monday, holding the Cubs to just two hits in seven scoreless innings of a 2-0 Padres victory.
Latos struck out nine and walked one in improving to 9-14. Latos got off to a slow start this year, posting a 4.04 ERA in 100 1/3 innings before the All-Star break, but has been excellent since the Midsummer Classic, turning in a 2.87 ERA and 92/24 K/BB ratio in 94 frames. He'll likely be under-drafted next spring.

Mat Latos tossed 8 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a win over the Rockies Tuesday.
He struck out nine and walked one. Latos came oh-so-close to his second career shutout, but gave up a two-out RBI single to Jordan Pacheco in the ninth before he was relieved by Heath Bell. Latos has gone at least six innings in 10 straight starts and at least seven in four straight. He's also struck out eight batters or more in four straight outings.

Mat Latos tossed seven innings of two-run ball in a win over the Rockies Sunday.
Latos was sharp, striking out eight, walking one and giving up just five hits. And he actually got some run support for a change. Latos has gone at least six innings in seven straight starts, but is just 2-3 over that span. He won't be a great bet for a win in Arizona next weekend.

Mat Latos failed to register a quality start Monday for the first time in August, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over six innings in a loss to the Dodgers.
James Loney took him deep for a two-run shot in the third inning and Latos' control wasn't too sharp for the second straight outing. Though his record fell to 6-13, Latos has been fantastic since the beginning of July, holding a 3.31 ERA over 11 starts. Latos will shoot for win No. 7 this weekend against the Rockies.

Mat Latos held the Giants to two runs (one earned) on just three hits in six innings on Tuesday, taking a no-decision in San Diego's 7-5 win in San Francisco.
He struck out two and walked four. The quality start was Latos' fifth straight, and leaves him with a 3.74 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 138/53 K/BB ratio through 151 2/3 innings. He'll get the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Monday.

Mat Latos allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in six innings of work on Wednesday, falling to 6-12 in San Diego's loss to the Mets.
He struck out six in what was his fourth consecutive quality start. The owner of a 3.38 ERA and sub-1.00 WHIP in 45 1/3 inning since the All-Star break, Latos will get the Giants in San Francisco his next time out.

Mat Latos yielded three runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Phillies on Saturday.
His only mistake was a three-run homer by Chase Utley in the bottom of the first inning. Otherwise, he was solid, giving up five hits while whiffing seven and walking a pair. Latos has allowed three runs or less in five consecutive starts, though he has just one win to show for it. He'll hope for better luck in his next start against the Diamondbacks next week.

Mat Latos yielded three earned runs over seven innings as part of no-decision against the Giants Sunday.
Latos struck out five, walked one and gave up seven hits. It's his fourth straight quality outing, but he has just one win over than span thanks to San Diego's inept offense. Latos' ERA will likely continue to fall during the second half, but getting wins will be like pulling teeth.

Mat Latos allowed just one run over 7 1/3 innings Friday, but he still fell to 5-10 after the Padres were shut out by the Dodgers.
Latos has been far from great this year, but he does deserve better: the Padres have scored a total of 14 runs in his 10 losses. He'll take a 4.04 ERA with him into the All-Star break.
