Severino will be set to pitch in Game 2 on Monday if New York drops the opener. The Mets need to win one of the two contests in order to secure a spot in the Wild Card round Tuesday. Tylor Megill will start Game 1 on the mound and if New York wins, Severino will shift his focus to being ready for the start of the postseason.

Severino (11-7) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk over four innings as the Mets fell 5-1 to Atlanta. He struck out five.

Severino needed 89 pitches (61 strikes) to record 12 outs, and he saw his quality start streak end at four. He's been one the Mets' most reliable arms during their playoff push, posting a 3.17 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 52:14 K:BB over his last eight trips to the mound, and Severino could be pitching with a wild-card spot on the line in his final start of the regular season, which lines up to come Sunday in Milwaukee.

Severino got off to a hot start, striking out five of the first eight batters he faced in the contest before allowing two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth. The right-hander generated 13 whiffs in the contest en route to posting at least seven strikeouts for the fifth time in his last eight outings. It marked Severino's fourth-consecutive quality start, while he's also secured wins in each of his last four decisions (spanning seven starts).

Severino did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Phillies, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six innings.

Severino was mostly in control but surrendered two home runs to Bryce Harper before departing with a 4-3 lead. The 30-year-old generated 11 whiffs on 86 pitches and has tossed three consecutive quality starts to open September. On the season, he owns a 3.77 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 149:57 K:BB across 172 innings and lines up for a rematch with the Phillies next week.

Severino did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out eight.

Severino yielded just one extra-base hit (a triple) and threw 66 of 100 pitches for strikes. The veteran right-hander picked up just his second quality start over his past eight outings, with the other being a complete-game shutout of Miami on Aug. 17. Monday's victory was Severino's 10th of the campaign, marking the first time he has reached double-digit wins since he went 19-8 for the Yankees in 2018. Not coincidentally, 2024 is the first time he's logged 20 starts since that standout 2018 campaign.

Severino did not factor into the decision in a loss to Arizona on Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out nine.

Severino struck out four of the first seven batters he faced before allowing Arizona's first run of the contest on an RBI single from Luis Guillorme. The right-hander was then victimized by the long ball in both the third and fourth innings and would later be relieved by Huascar Brazoban with two outs in the fifth, marking Severino's shortest outing this month. The 30-year-old veteran has now surrendered at least four runs in four of his last six starts, coughing up multiple homers in three of those outings.
