The young lefty was sent back down to Triple-A to clear a roster spot for Blaine Hardy, who will join the club Friday. Ryan went through a bit of a rough patch in mid-July, but he was able to weather the storm of late and fired three scoreless innings in Thursday's loss to the White Sox. With rosters expanding in less than a month, Ryan could be back with the big league club before too long.

Ryan has been lit up in his last two appearances, giving up five hits and four earned runs in 1.0 innings of relief.

Opponents are teeing off on him to the tune of a .308 batting average and his WHIP sits at an ugly 1.47. Ryan has given up 11 hits in his last 6.1 innings of work and sits outside looking in on any fantasy value right now.

Ryan gave up a pair of hits and intentionally walked two before he allowed the walk-off single in the 13th inning Sunday against the Royals.

After previously working exclusively as a starter throughout his career, Ryan has transitioned to a full-time relief role in 2016. Over 21 appearances spanning 20.1 innings, Ryan posted a 3.10 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, but tallied just nine strikeouts. He'll give the Tigers a left-handed option out of the bullpen, but don't expect him to be used in many high-leverage situations.

The Tigers will swap out lefty relievers heading into their weekend series against the White Sox by optioning Ryan and recalling Blaine Hardy from Toledo. Ryan worked a 3.20 ERA with nine strikeouts and three walks across 19.2 innings of work during his recent stint with the Tigers. He figures to be on a short list of potential call-ups down the line should the Tigers need another lefty reliever.

After coming on in the seventh and striking out Odubel Herrera, Ryan allowed a single to Freddy Galvis and was immediately pulled. Galvis would later come around to score. Ryan's ERA rose to 3.32 and it's evident that his role is mainly confined to facing left-handed hitters. He has been used often (19 appearances), but not enough to warrant fantasy consideration.

Ryan has not given up an earned run through six innings so far on the young season. While the Tigers gave the lefty six starts in 2015, Ryan has mostly been used in mid to late inning situations so far this April. During his tenure in the minors, Ryan was used almost exclusively as a starter, but as long as the 24-year-old continues to find success in relief for the Tigers, his role will likely remain there.

Ryan was hit hard Tuesday in a 16-1 loss to the Blue Jays in Spring Training action. He allowed two runs on three hits and a walk.

EDGE Analysis

He wasn't the only pitcher who was smacked around Tuesday. Ryan remains in camp and is vying for a spot in the bullpen. He doesn't overwhelm, but has a number of pitches, including a low-90s fastball, mid-80s cutter, low-80s curveball and a sinker that breaks the radar gun like his fastball. Ryan profiles a long-relief man and that just doesn't deliver much fantasy value.

Ryan was the tough-luck loser Monday afternoon in a 2-0 loss to the White Sox. He went 7.0 innings, allowing just six hits, one walk and two earned runs. He struck out two.

Jeff Samardzija was sparkling Monday and held the Tigers to just one hit. It was really too bad, as Ryan put together what was arguably his best start with the team.
