Oakland A's outfielder Josh Reddick is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles because of back tightness, according to the team's official website. Reddick was scratched from the lineup Tuesday due to the issue, and while he would have likely sat anyway with left-hander Wei-Yin Chen on the mound for the Orioles, it is unclear if he will be able to return Thursday. Sam Fuld will get the start in right field and bat second in place of Reddick, who is hitting .283 with 13 home runs and 45 RBI in 98 games this season. “Every time my foot would hit the ground, it kind of would sting a little,” Reddick told the Sacramento Bee after suffering the injury Sunday against the Cleveland Indians when he run into the Indians' bullpen in the fifth inning while trying to make a catch.

Reddick is out of Wednesday's lineup against the Yankees. Reddick absence Wednesday likely relates to the left-handed CC Sabathia on the mound for the Yankees. As a result, the A's have loaded their lineup with right-handed bats, including Jake Smolinski (batting sixth) in place of Reddick in right field.

Reddick recently expressed frustration with his inconsistent playing time against left-handed pitchers, CSN Bay Area reports. "It still frustrates me beyond belief when I don't play," said Reddick. "I wanna be in there helping my team no matter if a guy's throwing right-handed, left-handed or center-handed." Although Reddick started Thursday's game against Seattle's Roenis Elias, he was held out of the lineup the previous three times Oakland faced a lefty. The issue hasn't drawn much attention because the A's have faced just three lefties over the past three weeks, and they're only slated to face one more (on Sunday) before the All-Star break. Reddick didn't have noteworthy handedness splits prior to 2014, but he has really struggled against southpaws since the beginning of last year. It's a tough spot for the A's, as Reddick has otherwise been fantastic, and he clearly doesn't want to sit against lefties. While a strict platoon thus seems unlikely, it won't be surprising if Reddick gets a few days off each month.
