Orioles prospect infielder Jonathan Schoop has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with Triple-A Norfolk due to a lower back strain. Coming off a breakthrough performance during the World Baseball Classic, the 21-year-old Schoop is batting .268/.331/.386 with three home runs, 18 RBI and a .717 OPS through 34 games at Triple-A this year. He has played 17 games at shortstop and 17 at second base.

Orioles optioned 2B Jonathan Schoop, LHP Zach Britton, and 3B Yamaico Navarro to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles are expected to use Schoop at shortstop this year, but his best chance at reaching the majors will be at second base if/when Brian Roberts gets injured. Britton was competing for a spot in the Opening Day rotation.

An international free agent in 2009, Schoop batted .245/.324/.386 with 24 doubles, 14 homers, and 56 RBI in 485 at-bats at the Double-A level. Baseball America rated him as the No. 82 overall prospect in their pre-2012 rankings.
