Joe Kelly (hamstring) is expected to return to the Cardinals' active roster in 2-3 weeks. Kelly has made a slower-than-expected recovery from a left hamstring strain that he originally sustained on April 16 during a start at Milwaukee's Miller Park. Jaime Garcia has settled in as the Cardinals' fifth starter, so Kelly could return in a bullpen role.

Joe Kelly (hamstring) is throwing off a mound and is nearing a rehab assignment. Kelly's recovery from a strained left hamstring has come along very slowly, but it appears he's finally making some real progress. The right-hander has been out since mid-April, so he figures to need at least a couple rehab starts. It's possibly Kelly will return as a reliever.

Joe Kelly said Thursday that his strained left hamstring "feels better all the time." "There's not really much pain there anymore, but it's just tight in some spots still," Kelly said. "It feels better all the time. Every day I feel like it improves." While it appears he's making progress, Kelly is still limited to flat-ground throwing and isn't sure when he'll get back on a mound.

Joe Kelly (hamstring) threw lightly off a mound on Friday. However, the righty noted that he's still experiencing fatigue with his left hamstring. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny indicated that Kelly was unlikely to return during the team's current road trip that ends on May 11. Tyler Lyons will continue to occupy his spot in the rotation.

Joe Kelly (hamstring) is expected to make at least one rehab start. Kelly threw long-toss again Tuesday, but there's no timetable for when he'll return to a mound. He's probably looking at a return to the Cardinals around mid-May if he can avoid setbacks. Tyler Lyons is filling in for Kelly in the Cards' rotation.

Joe Kelly (hamstring) threw long-toss Friday. He's hoping to be cleared to throw off a mound soon. Kelly is eligible to return from the disabled list in a week, but that might be pushing it if he needs to make a rehab start. Tyler Lyons is filling in for now.

Cardinals placed RHP Joe Kelly on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain. Kelly suffered the injury Wednesday afternoon at Miller Park while trying to leg out a groundball to first base in the top of the fifth inning. He was sent back to St. Louis for an MRI, the results of which aren't yet available. Tyler Lyons appears likely to take his rotation spot next week against the Mets.
