Kelly (biceps) will not pitch his scheduled start Sunday and will instead throw a bullpen session, Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reports. John Farrell explained this is totally precautionary and just a step in stretching out Kelly for his first start on April 11. "We just want to get him up to normal, game intensity but not in a game setting," Farrell said.

Kelly (biceps) expects to make his next scheduled start Sunday, WEEI.com reports. Kelly threw a 32-pitch bullpen session Thursday and afterward proclaimed that his biceps issue was no longer limiting him. "My arm is feeling good right no," Kelly said. "Obviously a lot better when I had to come out of the game. After today, my bullpen session, I feel really confident where I'€™m going to be at in two days."

Kelly (biceps) had a light-throwing session Tuesday, ESPN Boston reports. He was removed from Monday's game with tightness in his biceps. Manager John Farrell is not ruling out Kelly making his next scheduled start and will get him on a mound in a couple of days to assess where he's at.

Kelly first felt a problem in his biceps during warm-ups Monday but decided to pitch through it, the Boston Herald reports. Kelly could not put any spin on the baseball and threw mostly fastballs and changeups, but even that hurt. He seems to think he'll get over this quickly, but in case he's delayed and can't start the regular season, keep Steven Wright's name handy come draft / auction day.

Kelly is dealing with biceps tightness and is being considered day-to-day, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports. Kelly had to be removed from Monday's Grapefruit League game, but the diagnosis appears to be much better than initially projected. While there was some concern that it could have been a serious injury, Kelly reported that he's dealt with a similar issue before and it "usually doesn't last too long," so he should be back to game action after missing only limited time.

Kelly left Monday's game in the third inning with an apparent injury, the Boston Globe's Peter Abraham reports. Kelly threw a pitch with the bases loaded in the third inning and catcher Ryan Hanigan immediately motioned toward the dugout, signifying a potential serious injury. Kelly went from the mound directly into the clubhouse with the athletic trainer. He was projected to be the No. 5 starter in Boston's rotation, and Steven Wright is the internal favorite to replace him. Should the injury end up being serous, the Cole Hamels trade rumors will pick up again, as starting rotation depth was already an issue for the Red Sox.

Kelly allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four Wednesday against the Yankees. The results aren't pretty, but Kelly and manager John Farrell were pleased with the command and control when compared to his first outing when he gave up four runs and seven hits in 1.2 innings. Of his 41 pitches, 28 went for strikes.

Kelly was hit hard in his spring debut, allowing seven hits and four runs in 1.2 innings Thursday night against the Twins. He threw 44 pitches, 29 for strikes. Other than the percentage of pitches for strikes, it was all bad for Kelly, whose four-seamer was catching too much of the plate. He tried to accentuate the positive, telling reporters that he's never had good springs, a claim borne out by the numbers. He had a 6.29 ERA in four spring starts for the Cardinals last season and a 4.91 ERA in six appearances in 2013.

Kelly is adding a four-seam fastball to his repertoire, WEEI.com reports. "That'€™s what I was working on [Saturday]. It was coming out good," Kelly explained. "I never threw it. This is the first time trying it. I thought I would give it a try. It's harder. It gets on hitters quick." Kelly drew raves from hitters following a live batting-practice session Saturday. The right-hander has had some success in the majors, but has yet to do it consistently.
