Kelly was hit hard in his spring debut, allowing seven hits and four runs in 1.2 innings Thursday night against the Twins. He threw 44 pitches, 29 for strikes. Other than the percentage of pitches for strikes, it was all bad for Kelly, whose four-seamer was catching too much of the plate. He tried to accentuate the positive, telling reporters that he's never had good springs, a claim borne out by the numbers. He had a 6.29 ERA in four spring starts for the Cardinals last season and a 4.91 ERA in six appearances in 2013.
